On a safari in the Eastern Cape you've got a good chance of spotting the Big Five and the children will love ticking various animals off their lists. In between game drives, there is plenty to keep the children entertained, whether that be on a nature walk with a ranger to learn about the region and search for insects; or a scavenger hunt around the reserve searching for clues to help you find the treasure at the end.
Some of our favourite reserves in the region are known for their conservation efforts, including Shamwari and Kwandwe, so take the chance to get involved and teach the children a thing or two about the importance of wildlife conservation. You could even visit an animal rehabilitation centre where orphaned, abandoned or injured animals are cared for before being released back into the wild.
But it's not all about the animals, and for something a bit different, take the chance to learn a bit of Xhosa, the country's second most common language after Zulu. We can arrange for you and the children to have a lesson in this rather unusual language to see if you can master the art of the various clicks and sounds.
Then head to the coast and the popular Plettenberg Bay, which is a great spot for surfing and is home to plenty of family friendly restaurants and places to stay. If you've got adventure junkies among you, have a go at canyoning, hiking, kayaking, riding or zip-lining. The world's highest bridge bungee jump also happens to be just down road... Or for a slightly tamer activity, head to the nearby monkey or bird sanctuaries, both great for younger children.
