Ol Malo is a privately-owned game sanctuary on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in Kenya's wild and beautiful North Eastern Province - 5000 acres of spectacular bush country overlooked by Mount Kenya.
In this majestic setting - on a rock escarpment on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau, bordering the tribal heartlands of the nomadic Samburu people - the Francombe family and their Samburu neighbours have created a home for themselves and a dream destination for those seeking a glimpse into the true heart of Africa.
Ol Malo is a striking lodge in an outstanding location - built from natural local materials, accommodation is in four luxurious and spacious double guest cottages, each with private verandas, huge baths, and fabulous views. Comfortable and accommodating sitting and dining rooms provide shady terraces for protection from the sun - and open fireplaces for the cooler evenings. The lodge also has a beautiful infinity swimming pool on the cliff side which has stunning views of the valley below.
Game viewing is good at Ol Malo, and ranges from elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and wild dog to the plains game of eland, kudu, zebra and giraffe, to name a few. Activities include day & night game drives, guided game walks, camel riding, horse riding, bush breakfasts and lunches, nights spent camping by the river under the stars (highly recommended) and colourful and authentic visits to their neighbours, the Samburu. There is also a much frequented waterhole below the lodge where they have put in a 'hide' where guests are welcome to go during the day and wait to see what comes along. For the really adventurous, there are four bunk beds set up to allow you to spend the night there in the hope of catching a glimpse of the elusive leopard.
Ol Malo also offer guests 'Nomad Safaris', travelling by foot, camel or horseback, often to regions which are inaccessible by road, and camping out for at least two nights away from the lodge, as well as exhilirating helicopter flights, whether for romantic sundowners, a picnic breakfast at flamingo pools, or a few nights exploring Turkana, staying in Kikuyu-run camps.
For those looking for an exclusive experience at Ol Malo with family and friends, then Ol Malo Private House is just the place. Situated just a ten minute drive from the main lodge, this new building on the property is exclusive to one group of guests and is able to accommodate 12 guests with ease. It is beautifully designed with its own swimming pool and huge bbq area. It offers all the same activities as Ol Malo main lodge and you are hosted throughout, and have your own private guide.
