Venture to southern Kenya, to the tropical shores of the Indian Ocean, and you’ll find Mombasa. The country’s second-largest city after Nairobi, Mombasa is renowned for its handmade crafts and culinary delicacies such as kuku wa kupaka - a rice dish made with chicken, coconut and spices - and mango snow - a refreshing fresh fruit dessert. The newer parts of mainland Mombasa are linked to the peaceful old town – set on an island - either by bridge or by ferry. Accompanied by a local guide, explore the maze of alleyways which are home to historic buildings, authentic craft stalls and wood-carving workshops,
and tick off some of the city’s main sites including Fort Jesus Museum, Basheikh Mosque, Mombasa Memorial Cathedral and Mackinnon Market.
