Comprised of four camps in the Masai Mara National Reserve, the Governors Camp Collection offers a fantastic choice of different accommodation styles, all with access to safari in one of the world’s best game viewing regions.
At all four properties game drives are offered twice a day and the dedicated guides will help guests spot the numerous animals calling the reserve home, including all of the Big Five. Visits to local Maasai villages can also be arranged and, in a private concession adjacent to the main reserve, walking safaris are offered.
The main Governors Camp is set amongst the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River and is made up of 37 canvas style tents. Created in 1972 the camp set new standards in luxury for a tented camp and has continued to uphold this standard ever since. When it comes to dining guests will enjoy fresh African cuisine in the open sided dinning tent which has stunning views over the plains. They can then retire to the bar tent which overlooks the river and watch the night sky with a drink or two.
Little Governors' Camp is the main camp's quieter little brother. Built around a small watering hole that teems with wildlife, the peaceful camp is reached by boat across the river, and consists of just 17 canvas tents. Accommodation is very comfortable, with each tent also having a private veranda that offers ever-changing views of the bush and often of elephants who like to pass through camp. Breakfast and lunch are served al fresco, dinner in the dining tent, and drinks can then be enjoyed around the roaring campfire.
Even smaller and served by staff who really know how to go the extra mile, Governors' Il Moran Camp has had a luxurious refurbishment and is our favourite camp. The camp's 10 spacious tents are hidden deep in the forest which borders the Mara River and inside feature plush super-king sized beds and Victorian style roll-top baths, as well as quirky handmade furniture. Meals at Il Moran are more luxurious too, and delicious dinners are usually served by candlelight on the main deck which overlooks the river. This is the ideal camp for honeymooners or couples wanting to make their Mara stay that bit more special.
Finally, for families or private groups, there is Governors' Private Camp. Here there are just eight large tents set out in a sociable structure but also positioned to make the most of the surrounding views. During the stay groups will have a dedicated host who will ensure meals and service is suited to the group's preferences. Despite being for private use only the camp is not lacking in facilities and spa treatments can even be organised.
