Claughton House sits atop a hill amidst acres of walled-in gardens on the South Sri Lankan coast. Designed by architect Geoffrey Bawa the villa is a fine example of intelligent architecture enhancing beautiful surroundings.
Upon entering the property it quickly becomes apparent that the views are everything here as the multi-terraced living space overlooks some of the best vistas in Southern Sri Lanka. There are five en-suite bedrooms in total, sleeping a maximum of seven guests, each decorated in light tones and donning crisp white linens. The master bedroom features a balcony with sea views whilst room number two has a private courtyard with an outdoor shower (hello al fresco bathing!).
When it comes to dining the house keepers, upon request, can stock the fridge with groceries and the in-house chef is ready and rearing to cook up no ends of delights in the fully equipped kitchen, be that local Sri Lankan cuisine or international fair. Dine indoors, al fresco on the terrace or enjoy a poolside BBQ.
At the bottom of the coconut tree filled garden, aside the generous two-tiered pool, sits the pool terrace dotted with daybeds and sun-loungers. Other facilities include a yoga pavilion, a tropical courtyard and a TV/ Games rooms perfect for entertaining the littler ones (and the rather competitive bigger ones).
Spend days lazing by the pool or simply relaxing in the villa which is kept cool by both air-con and the natural airflow that graces the property, swept up from the gardens and through the open doors to refresh every corner of the villa (just one of Geoffrey Bawa's intelligent design pieces). For the water babies, take the path by the pool and head down to the white sands of Kudawella Beach where you'll find fishing boats bobbing in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
The covered yoga Sala is the perfect spot for those early morning sun salutations.
