Tucked away down narrow Old Theatre Street and opposite the Carmelite Church sits Casa Ellul, in our humble opinion the best boutique hotel in Valletta.
A converted neo-classical mansion dating back to the 1830s (which, ironically, makes it one of the younger buildings within the city walls) Casa Ellul is a family owned and run hotel that effortlessly blends new and old and has just eight suites designed by architect Chris Briffa.
The spacious suites are all individually decorated, with comfortable king sized beds, wonderful photography, en suite bathrooms and the latest tech including a mobile sound system. Three of the suites have a balcony, a further three have rooftop terraces with views across the city, and two of these suites also have a private hot tub.
The ground floor is home to the hotel reception and an internal courtyard overseen by a classical statue of Hercules, and this is where breakfasts are served. Casa Ellul does not cater for any other meals, but the friendly and knowledgeable staff can recommend all the best restaurants and bars in the city.
Why we love it
Rather like a Moroccan riad, Casa Ellul is an oasis of tranquillity but step out of the discreet front door and within five minutes' walk you're in the heart of Valletta's action.
