Once you’ve wrapped your head around the fact that Argentina’s seasons are opposite to ours, Argentina winter holidays are undeniably enticing and offer a sunnier alternative for the months of December, January and February. Patagonia is at its peak during Argentina’s summer, and hiking across its rugged mountains is best enjoyed with some sunshine in tow. October through to April is considered the best time to visit Argentina’s wine region, Mendoza, when the vineyards are heavy with abundant grape harvests and blue skies provide an idyllic backdrop for wine tasting. Visit in February or March for the annual vendimia (wine harvest) celebrations, which feature festive dancing, Malbec tastings and regional food pairings.
The Lake District and Southern Patagonia begin to reawaken from their winter slumber as early as October, signalled by colourful wildflowers cropping up across the landscapes. This shoulder season (from October to November) is good for avoiding tourist crowds, which tend to flock to the region in December and January. Argentina winter holidays can also take you to the country’s golden coastline, pockmarked with pristine beaches, including Playa Unión on the central coast and Playa Escondida, south of Mar del Plata.
