With such a diverse range of experiences on offer, Japan has plenty to keep children and big-kids alike entertained. It is perhaps not the first destination that comes to mind when deciding on your next family holiday, but the colourful cities, quirky culture and beautiful blossom-clad views are sure to win you over and put Japan firmly at the top of your list. And we haven’t even mentioned the delicious food, beautiful rural regions or the spectacular volcano lake. Nigh impossible to see everything in one visit, a Japan family holiday requires advanced planning and expert guidance in order to get the most out of your holiday. For many, the main pull of a trip to Japan is to learn about the fascinating culture. Although a visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, a tour of the beautiful Kenrokuen Garden and a stay in a traditional Japanese inn (called a 'ryokan') are all undeniable must-dos, there is a wealth of more unusual, under the radar experiences to introduce the whole family to.

In Kyoto, get involved in a cookery class, and create a classic Japanese bento box filled with food designed to look like famous characters (Hello Kitty anyone?). The city is also known for its excellent tempura dishes, where fresh ingredients are deep-fried in a delicious batter. Kyoto is also home to some museums your youngsters will simply love such as the Kyoto International Manga Museum and the Toei Kyoto Studio, where the family can dress up in period costumes and watch actors filming for Japanese TV shows. No trip to Japan is complete without a tour of Tokyo. Home to some of the world's tallest skyscrapers, a wealth of luxurious hotels and vivid street life, a tour with a local guide is the best way to soak up this sensational city. All this, and we haven't even scratched the surface. The UNESCO World Heritage town of Takayama, a trip to see the adorable snow monkeys, karate lessons, and a traditional dinner with a maiko (Japanese geisha) are just a few of the family-friendly, cultural experiences you won't get anywhere else in the world.
