While we’re all for spontaneous getaways, there’s a lot to be said for organising a holiday ahead of time. And when it comes to One Step Ahead Travel, families are at the forefront. With school holidays to work around, little travellers to cater to, and family-friendly hotels to hunt down, it’s no surprise that families tend to plan further ahead than the average traveller. In fact, according to a recent study carried out by the tourism association Visit Orlando, the average British family plans their holiday a whopping six months in advance. Now that October half term is safely negotiated, that means that it’s time to turn your thoughts to your next family foray. Read on for some key dates for the diary when it comes to organising your next family holiday…
With Christmas just around the corner, destinations are filling up fast, but there is still some availability if you’re itching to get away. Head to the Dolomites for a family-friendly skiing adventure complete with cosy mountain lodges and steaming mugs of hot chocolate (with an added splash of liqueur for you parents). If you’re after some winter sun, make a beeline for Sri Lanka for excellent food, stunning landscapes and fascinating culture or the Florida Keys for relaxing beach days, fun fishing trips and underwater snorkelling and scuba diving adventures.
February Half Term 2022
Escape the drizzle with a February half term trip to Oman (think dolphin spotting and desert adventures) or Egypt (think ancient history and diving in the Red Sea). For the perfect blend of buzzing cities and idyllic islands, head to Thailand, which is wonderful at this time of year, or treat yourself to a bush and beach adventure in Tanzania complete with game drives across the infinite savannahs and watersports on the coast. If you’re planning on staying a little closer to home, there's still some availability in Tenerife, which has some fabulous family-friendly resorts and beautiful beaches at every turn.
Looking to combine nature, wildlife and beaches? Costa Rica is a real winner for all three and there’s still availability for the Easter holidays, but you need to book now. This is the perfect destination for adventure-loving families; spend your trip trekking through cloud forests, observing rare green turtles come ashore to nest on the beaches (between July and October), and travelling by boat into the wonderfully wild Tortuguero National Park. If you’re after a family beach holiday, Cyprus and the Seychelles are fabulous at this time of year, or there’s India or Morocco if you’re desperate for a culture fix (and some fantastically fiery food for the adults).
Bucket List Summer
Dreaming of your next family bucket list trip? Peru, Canada and Australia are all wonderful in the summer, with outdoorsy adventures galore, or there’s Zambia or Botswana for a family safari adventure complete with luxury lodges and family-friendly guides. And for the journey of a lifetime? Travel by train from the busy streets of London to the winding waterways of Venice aboard the legendary Orient Express. This iconic train takes you back in time with its glamorous interiors and grand suites and is the perfect memory-making experience if you’ve got youngsters in tow.
