Sweden has it all, from city life to islands and nature – all of which are often layered on top of one another. This eight-day family trip starts in Stockholm, a capital built across 14 islands, where you’ll cycle between leafy parks and buzzing neighbourhoods before visiting its postcard-perfect islands and built-up museums (ABBA, anyone?).

For the second half of your Swedish adventure, pick up your hire car and drive inland to Dalarna, a region of forests, lakes and red wooden houses. Sure to entice even the most cynical teens away from their devices, Dalarna’s rolling countryside has been inspiring painters and recharging city dwellers for centuries, and it doesn’t take long to understand why. Along the way, visit the iconic Falun Copper Mine, climb Bjorkberget Mountain and even head out on a guided forest hike in Dalarna, complete with an open-air campfire waffle break that tends to be the highlight of the trip – no age limit required.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Passports at the ready: your family adventure to Sweden begins today. This morning, head to the airport, whizz through security and enjoy some coffee (or juice, for the little ones) in the lounge before boarding your straightforward two-and-a-half-hour direct flight to Stockholm.

When you arrive, board the Arlanda Express to the city centre and check in for four nights in Norrmalm, Stockholm’s most animated district and well-placed for the next few days of exploring.

The evening is yours – Norrmalm is chock-full of great places to eat, and a bowl of Swedish meatballs with lingonberry is as good an introduction to the country as any.

This morning, fuel up with a hearty breakfast before meeting your guide and setting out on a bike tour across the city. Cycling across Stockholm’s 14 islands and 57 bridges lets you move between places quickly, stopping where things catch your eye.

The route begins in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s historic old town, where narrow cobbled streets are lined with colourful houses. Next, visit Sodermalm, the city’s creative and slightly alternative southern island, before heading to Kungsholmen, a residential neighbourhood complete with green parks, a sparkling waterfront and open-air cinemas in summer.

The rest of the day is yours for the taking – consult our curated destination Dossier for local recommendations.

Today, take the two-hour ferry out to Grinda, a pretty island that showcases an entirely different side of Sweden. From rocky shorelines and hidden beaches to dense pine forests and red wooden houses, it’s the kind of place that looks exactly like a postcard. When you arrive, set off for a serene hike or jump into the sparkling water – the younger members of your clan can splash about to their heart’s content while parents relax on the pristine shore.

If the children are still raring to go, you can also kayak through the Stockholm archipelago, paddling around Vaxholm Island through the Bogesund Nature Reserve (with a pastry stop along the way, of course).

Today, spend the day on Djurgarden. Once a royal hunting ground, this lush island is now the city’s green lung and a popular family destination. The Vasa Museum alone is worth the trip: this maritime museum is home to a 17th-century warship, salvaged almost entirely intact, that tragically sank on its maiden voyage. If you’re travelling with little dancing queens, visit the ABBA Museum instead for an interactive musical experience.

After you’ve got your bearings, we’ve secured tickets to the Skansen Open-Air Museum. The museum consists of a sprawling collection of traditional buildings from across the country, the oldest dating to the 14th century, with parks, a rose garden and Stockholm Zoo woven in between. This is living history at its best, and is one of those rare places that works equally well for six-year-olds and 60-year-olds.

For an optional extra activity, head out on a walking safari through the surrounding nature reserves in search of moose, deer, beavers and white-tailed eagles, with a a picnic along the way.

Pick up your trusty hire car this morning and drive around three hours to Falun, Dalarna’s historic capital and home to one of Sweden’s most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Falun Mine. Helmets and waterproofs on, descend 220 feet underground into the copper mine’s galleries and vast chambers – an immersive step back into 17th-century mining life that is sure to impress even the most reluctant historians in the group.

From Falun, drive another hour to Tallberg, your base for the next three nights. Set on the shores of Lake Siljan, Tallberg is a small village full of colourful wooden houses and gentle slopes that feels a long way from the city. Check into your new hotel and enjoy a tasty Swedish dinner before heading up to bed, ready for more exploring tomorrow

Today’s all about exploring Tallberg. This renowned village is characteristic of the traditional Dalarna region, home to a spraklin glake, wooden houses and sprawling orchards.

This morning, meet a local botanist and forest enthusiast for a guided hike, winding off the beaten path through Dalarna’s woods. Along the way, soak in the lush landscapes, take on outdoor challenges and learn all about the region’s nature. Just as the children begin to drag their feet, stop to cook deliciously sweet waffles over a campfire you’ll have lit yourselves – something you’ll all still be talking about on the way home.

In the afternoon, drive to Nusnas, birthplace of the dalahast – the painted wooden horse that has become Sweden’s most recognisable folk object. Each dalahast is hand-carved from a single piece of wood and decorated with traditional floral motifs rooted in old peasant painting. While you’re here, visit a local workshop and paint your own for the perfect Swedish souvenir.

This morning, take a 30-minute drive to Siljansnas and climb to Naturum Dalarna, a visitor centre perched on top of Bjorkberget Mountain. After admiring the views across the surrounding countryside, learn about the region from exhibitions on Dalarna’s natural landscape, including the rather extraordinary origin story of Lake Siljan, which was formed by the impact of a meteorite.

From there, drive around 45 minutes to Mora to visit the home of Anders Zorn, the painter whose work captured Swedish rural life with an almost documentary-like precision. The house has barely changed since his death in 1920: the Viking room where he entertained guests still carries its original atmosphere, and his paintings are displayed alongside the landscape that inspired them.

It’s sadly time for your Swedish family adventure to come to an end. This morning, drive three-and-a-half hours back to Stockholm, return the car at the airport and stock up on Swedish snacks before boarding your flight home. The journey back to the UK takes around two-and-a-half hours – just enough time to plan your next Scandi sojourn…

KAYAK THE STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO

Beavers and coastal birds can be spotted along the way, and a fika stop – Sweden’s non-negotiable coffee-and-something-sweet break – is built into the route.

MEET THE LOCAL WILDLIFE

Travelling with a tiny wildlife enthusiast? Stockholm sits alongside seven nature reserves and around 100 parks, some of them edging into ancient forest at the city’s outskirts.
