Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Make your way to the airport for a two-hour flight to Copenhagen, where your multi-city break begins. After touching down in the Danish capital, head to your hotel in one of the city’s vibrant districts.

Spend the rest of today getting a feel for Copenhagen, exploring on foot or by bike (you’ll be in good company in the world’s most cyclist-friendly city). From the retro rides of Tivoli Gardens to marvellous museums like the Statens Museum for Kunst and the Designmuseum Danmark, there’s plenty to see and do. Each corner of Copenhagen has its own charm: the colourful counter-culture community of Freetown Christiania, the brightly hued houses of Nyhavn, the trendy bars and galleries of the Meatpacking District.

To make it easier to explore, we can arrange Copenhagen Cards for you; a handy pass providing unlimited access to public transport and free entry to many of the city’s museums and monuments.

Your foray into the Scandi food scene gets properly underway today with a private gourmet tour of Copenhagen. First up, follow your guide to Torvehallerne market, the culinary temple of the Danish capital. Sample delicious smoked and marinated fish, including the famous herring (spegesild) and shrimp (rejer), along with artisan charcuterie and cheeses, refreshing cider and many other Danish delicacies.

Next, head to Jaeggersborggade in the lively Norrebro district. Along this small street, the avant-garde of local cuisine is showcased in concept restaurants, microbreweries, bakeries and grocery stores. Meet chefs, producers, and entrepreneurs of new Nordic cuisine who are putting traditional Scandinavian products firmly back on the menu.

Still hungry? We can arrange a tasting dinner at one of the city's best restaurants for this evening.

Say a fond farewell to Denmark and its captivating capital this morning as you board a three-hour train to Gothenburg (after picking up one last Danish pastry for the journey). You’re spending the next two nights in Sweden’s second city, so after dropping your bags at the hotel, head out and about to get your bearings. The city’s compact size means it’s easy to explore on foot.

If you have time this afternoon, we recommend taking in a few of the sights, like the Rohsska Museum (home to Swedish, European and East Asian art) or Feskekorka, which is Gothenburg’s landmark fish market (continuing the foodie theme). This evening, rub shoulders with the locals at the counter of a natural wine bar or in a trendy microbrewery, before consulting our Dossier to discover our top picks of places to eat. The restaurant scene is buzzing, so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Today, take a guided tour of Gothenburg to discover its charms in the company of a local. Lose yourself in the cobbled streets, learning the history of Scandinavia’s main port and how it’s grown to be the vibrant city you see today.

One of our favourite areas is the historic Haga district. Originally a neglected working class neighbourhood, it's been transformed into a trendy, laid-back district dotted with fashionable cafés. One of those is the Café Husaren, which is famed for both its 19th-century architecture and its kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon rolls). Also worth a visit are the Art Nouveau Hagabadet public baths (a favourite among Gothenburgers) and the Hagakyrkan church, built in the 1850s and easily recognisable by its imposing bell tower.

Gothenburg boasts a vibrant culinary scene, brimming with hidden gems and offering a wonderful introduction to modern Swedish cuisine. With that in mind, this evening you have a reservation at one of the city's finest restaurants.

The jewel in Sweden’s crown awaits today as you board your three-and-a-half-hour train to Stockholm. Settle back and watch the Scandi scenery whizz by as the capital draws closer.

A harmonious blend of tradition and trends, Stockholm is an ultramodern city nestled among abundant nature. Spread across an archipelago of 14 islands linked by 57 bridges, the city is best explored on foot, via the Metro (which is a veritable underground art gallery) or with scenic ferry crossings. Each area has its own distinct personality. Ostermalm embodies elegance, while Djurgarden (once the royal hunting grounds) is the capital's green lung. Norrmalm is the lively and vibrant centre, while Gamla Stan invites leisurely strolls through the old town’s cobbled streets.

Wherever you venture, fika is a must between sightseeing. This cherished ritual (essentially a coffee break alongside something sweet) is a fundamental feature of daily life for Swedes. Join in by sipping a coffee and socialising, accompanied by yet another kanelbulle (cinnamon bun).

The best way to really get to know a place is to explore with a local, so today you’re joined by a knowledgeable guide for a private tour of the city. Tick off landmarks like the Royal Palace and the German Church, or delve into Swedish culture at a selection of excellent museums, including the Museum of National Antiquities, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Vasa Museum, the Viking Ship Museum and (one for Eurovision fans) the ABBA Museum.

All those sightseeing steps are sure to help you work up an appetite. Since it’s the final night of your Scandi sojourn, we’ve booked you a table at one of the city’s best restaurants for a last taste of Stockholm’s culinary credentials. What better way to toast your trip?

Sadly, your foodie tour of trendy Scandinavian cities draws to a close today – but not before one final fika. After polishing off a last pastry, make your way to the airport for your flight back to the UK, which takes around two hours and 40 minutes.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

A TASTING MENU IN COPENHAGEN

Visit one of Copenhagen’s excellent restaurants to enjoy a tasting menu of classic Nordic dishes reimagined with creative cooking techniques. With a seasonal focus, there are set menus for both summer and winter, which can be paired with either the standard wine list or an enhanced selection of wines. We’ll toast to that.

A GOURMET STROLL AROUND GOTHENBURG

Discover Gothenburg with a foodie focus during a culinary walking tour, punctuated with various tastings along the way. With several Michelin-starred restaurants and seafood renowned throughout Scandinavia, the city’s culinary scene shines brightly. This is a great way to sample it for yourself.

DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE IN STOCKHOLM

The Swedish capital is world-renowned for its eclectic architecture and design credentials. Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Nordic Classicism are the focus during this design and architecture-led tour, which showcases the trendiest galleries, showrooms and boutiques along with architectural achievements in the fashionable Sodermalm district.

THE STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO BY KAYAK

The Stockholm archipelago is Sweden’s largest, comprising nearly 30,000 islands, islets and reefs scattered across the tranquil waters of the Baltic Sea. Its charm has captivated numerous artists and writers, immortalised in literature by August Strindberg and on canvas by renowned artists like Bruno Liljefors and Anders Zorn. This vast nature reserve is best explored by kayak, observing the archipelago's scenery and soaking up its atmosphere as you paddle with your guide.

WITH A FEW MORE DAYS...

DISCOVER GRINDA ISLAND

Among the thousands of islands in the Stockholm archipelago, Grinda, just a short ferry ride from the city, is one of the locals’ favourites. The air is pure and the landscape lush and green, dotted with charming red wooden houses. In summer, the small beaches are perfect for swimming. To fully enjoy the tranquillity of the island, we can arrange for you to stay the night.

SET SAIL TO SANDHAMN ISLAND

A two-hour ferry ride from Stockholm, the small island of Sandhamn is very popular with boaters. Around 100 people live in the small village year-round, while the rest of the island is almost entirely covered in pine trees and dotted with small sandy beaches washed by the Baltic Sea. Popular with artists and writers, fans of crime fiction may recognise Sandhamn as the island where Mikael Blomkvist – the protagonist of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy of novels – finds refuge.
