After a quick stay in Kiruna, kick off your trip properly in Abisko National Park, where you’ll soak up the Lapland way of life: think snowshoeing, snowmobiling and searching for the elusive Northern Lights.

Next, swap Sweden for Norway as you head to Narvik, the gateway to the northern islands, before driving to Straumsjoen, a pretty town in the Vesteralen archipelago. After taking in the pristine Scandinavian nature and snow-capped scenery, continue on to Nusfjord, an iconic village in the Lofoten Islands, where bright red rorbuer (traditional fisherman’s huts) contrast with the sparkling snow.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Hats, scarves and gloves at the ready: your winter adventure begins today. Head to the airport, whizz through security and enjoy a warming drink in the lounge before boarding your flight to Kiruna, in northern Sweden. With a quick stopover, the journey will take between five and six hours, and you’ll touch down later this afternoon.

When you arrive, you’ll be met and privately transferred to the centre of Kiruna, home to a fascinating 20th-century church, a grand town hall with an iconic clock tower and a contemporary art museum. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon unwinding after your flight before finishing the evening with a drink in the bar and a tasty meal in the restaurant.

After a hearty breakfast this morning, board the train to Abisko, which takes around one hour. When you arrive, check in for a two-night stay in a warm and comfortable lodge.

Abisko is the gateway to the eponymous Abisko National Park, a wild protected area that runs alongside Lake Tornetrask. While it’s beautiful all year round, winter brings enchanting scenery and the opportunity to ski, snowshoe or sledge through the Arctic landscape.

After a few hours spent settling in, head out on an evening snowshoe hike in search of the elusive Northern Lights. Under the cover of night, wander through snowy landscapes with an expert guide, keeping your eyes trained on the starry sky for those telltale green and blue streaks. Along the way, your guide will share the myths and legends surrounding this phenomenon.

If that’s not quite enough excitement, we can also arrange for you to experience an up-close encounter with some of northern Sweden’s resident reindeer on an exhilarating sleigh ride.

This morning, wrap up warm and head out to explore more of Abisko’s sparkling landscapes on an exciting snowmobile safari. After learning to drive your snowmobile with a friendly guide, whizz through the wilderness of the national park, zipping through mountain valleys and past frozen lakes. Along the way, you’ll travel to more secluded areas of the park, so keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife, including Arctic hares, foxes and moose.

Come evening, we can also book a table at the Aurora Sky Station, a mountain restaurant reachable by chairlift. Enjoy a traditional Nordic meal overlooking Abisko’s spectacular scenery, soundtracked by a crackling log fire.

This morning, wave goodbye to Abisko as you climb aboard another one-and-a-half-hour train to Narvik, on the other side of the Norwegian border. While the city is primarily known for exporting iron to southern Norway, it’s also the gateway to the wild landscapes and scenic fjords of the nearby northern archipelagos.

When you arrive, settle in for an overnight stay in Narvik. If you’re tired after the journey, spend the rest of the day relaxing – or, if you’re still raring to go, we can arrange a s kiing trip in Narvikfjellet.

This morning, pick up your trusty hire car and set off on the journey to the Vesteralen archipelago. Without stopping, the drive takes around four hours, but we’d recommend paying a visit to the village of Nyksund, an old fishing port abandoned at the end of the 1970s. Often described as the ‘End of the World’ due to its remote location at the edge of the ocean, the village boasts fantastic scenery, with colourful houses reflected in crystal-clear water against a rugged mountain backdrop.

After you’ve been suitably wowed, continue on to Straumsjoen, set just east of Engeloya Island, and settle in for a two-night stay. Spend the rest of the afternoon soaking up the scenery, from the charming red houses to the serene waters.

After a hearty breakfast, we’ve arranged for you to head out on a birdwatching trip in the nearby fjords. The cliffs and waters of the Vesteralen archipelago are home to a wide variety of seabirds, so board a zodiac boat and venture out along the wild coast and the steep mountains to observe these winged wonders. Along the way, your guide will fill you in on the birds that inhabit the area, including some rare species such as the emblematic sea eagle.

This morning, swap one archipelago for another as you hit the road to the iconic Lofoten Islands. The drive will take around four and a half-hours, so press play on our expertly curated Europe playlist and settle in for the journey.

When you arrive, settle in for two nights in Nusfjord, a UNESCO-listed fishing village set between two mountains. During your time in this iconic town, you’ll be staying in a rorbu, a traditional fisherman's hut painted in bright shades of red and yellow. Spend the rest of the afternoon taking in the scenery before heading out to a local restaurant – our clued-up Concierge is on hand to recommend the best spots in town.

We’ve left your last wintry day free for you to take in the beauty of the Lofoten Islands. While the name might conjure images of rugged mountains towering over sparkling waters, the islands also boast a number of beautiful white-sand beaches hidden among the hills. Head to nearby Haukland to take in the sandy stretch or, if you fancy a little more privacy, make your way to Kvalvika, which is harder to reach but much more peaceful.

In between visits to beaches, you could also stop at the endearing fishing villages dotted across Lofoten. Å, at the southern tip of the archipelago, offers fantastic views over the water, while Henningsvaer boasts a variety of small independent art galleries.

After something a little more active? We can arrange for you to kayak around the archipelago, discovering island landscapes, rocky cliffs and snow-covered peninsulas.

It’s sadly time to head back home. After one last breakfast, hop back in the car and head to Evenes Airport, a four-and-a-half-hour drive away. When you arrive, return your hire car and board your return flight, which, with a quick stopover, will take between five and six hours.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

REINDEER ENCOUNTER & SLEIGH RIDE

Fancy meeting a real-life reindeer? On this trip, head to a nearby reindeer farm to learn more about these festive animals, which have now become symbols of Lapland life. Spend some time with these gentle creatures, then board a sleigh for a ride through the snow. Along the way, your friendly guide will tell you all about traditional Sami culture before stopping for a local meal, accompanied by a warming cup of coffee.

DINNER AT THE AURORA SKY STATION

The Aurora Sky Station is a mountain restaurant in Abisko National Park, reachable only by chairlift. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy authentic Lapland cuisine in front of a crackling wood fire while soaking up views over Abisko’s valleys, lakes, rivers and mountains.

SKIING IN NARVIKFJELLET

Located at the end of the Ofot Fjord, almost 140 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the Narvikfjellet Ski Resort is the largest skiing destination in northern Norway. During this excursion, you’ll have the opportunity to hurtle down the powder slopes while enjoying incredible views of the fjord.

KAYAKING IN LOFOTEN

In our opinion, the best way to experience Lofoten is from the water. Today, jump aboard a kayak and paddle through the fjords of Lofoten, gliding past adorable fishing villages and beautiful white sand beaches surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains.
