Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
Sweden – Stockholm – Lapland – Lulea
100% customisable for you
It’s time for your Swedish getaway to begin. Today, head to the airport, speed through security and enjoy some nibbles in the lounge before boarding your two-and-a-half-hour flight to Stockholm.
When you arrive, hop aboard the high-speed Arlanda Express from the airport to the city centre, where you’ll be staying for the next two nights. Once you’ve settled in, take some time to explore – museums dedicated to modern art, architecture, boats and ABBA are all within walking distance.
This evening, there’s no need to worry about where to eat – our clued-up Concierge will reserve a table for you in one of the best restaurants in the city. Once you’re suitably stuffed, head back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep, ready for another day of exploring.
It’s time to explore Stockholm. This morning, set off on a private tour of the capital, ticking off the highlights with a knowledgeable guide.
Begin at the eastern tip of Kungsholmen Island, where the crimson bricks of the Old Town Hall are reflected in the sparkling waters of Lake Malaren, before heading to the small island of Gamla Stan, home to Stockholm’s Old Town. This charming district dates back to the 13th century, boasting a superb maze of cobbled streets, pastel and ochre-hued buildings and pretty little squares.
Further south, visit the Sodermalm peninsula, a small green corner of Stockholm. This former workers’ district has transformed into one of the city's trendiest, complete with designer boutiques, alternative galleries and vibrant nightlife.
If you’d like to take to the water, we can also arrange a ferry trip to Vaxholm Island.
Today, spend some time exploring the island of Djurgarden. Once a royal hunting ground, Djurgarden is now part of Stockholm’s Royal National City Park. Today, it’s centred around its myriad museums: the Vasa Museum, which houses a well-preserved 17th-century warship, Skansen, an open-air museum that features over 100 traditional Swedish houses, and (perhaps most importantly), the ABBA Museum, dedicated to Sweden's most famous band.
This evening, head to the train station to catch the sleeper train to Lulea, a pretty city in the far north. Your first-class ticket gets you a private sleeping area, so take some time to settle in and get comfortable before you set off. The journey will take around 14 hours, but don’t worry – it’s hard not to fall asleep as you chug peacefully along…
After a good night's sleep, lulled by the gentle hum of the train, wake up to the rolling landscapes of the Swedish north outside your window. Throughout the morning, views over forests, meadows and lakes unfold, punctuated by the occasional traditional Scandinavian village.
Arrive in Lulea at lunchtime, where a private driver will be waiting to whisk you to your retreat. Spend the rest of the day settling in – if you’re lucky (and the timing is right), you might be able to spot the Northern Lights from here.
Today, wrap up warm and head out on a snowmobile excursion. With an expert guide, climb aboard your snowmobile and set off to uncover Lulea’s frosted landscapes.
Along the way, discover frozen fishing villages, unusual ice formations and wintry wildlife. Exploring Lapland by snowmobile allows you to truly appreciate its vastness while enjoying the thrill of gliding through the powdery snow.
At the end of the adventure, disembark and tuck into a comforting lunch cooked over a campfire – the perfect way to warm up after your snowy outing.
It’s time for more snowy scenery as you head out on a husky sledge ride. Once your guide has geared up, experience the serene silence of the snow-covered plains as the majestic dogs pull you along. You’ll be at the front of your sledge, steering yourself through the mystical landscape – or, if you’re travelling with your other half, simply let them take the reins and take in the pristine white scene unfolding around you.
Later, you’ll also be treated to a Swedish sauna session at your lodge. Perfect for helping your muscles recover from steering your sledge, this experience aims to reduce stress and improve circulation, leaving you relaxed and rejuvenated. If you’re feeling daring, do as the Swedes do and step out for a refreshing break in the cold air before returning to the warmth of the bastu.
Your final day in Lapland sees you cross-country skiing. Once a necessity for local communities to travel from place to place, this activity has gradually become more of a recreational pursuit – though, in some places, Swedish children still ski to school.
Like dog sledging, cross-country skiing across the brilliant white snow lets you enjoy the blissful silence of the far north. Your guide will teach you how to execute the traditional Swedish cross-country and skating techniques, so you’ll be skiing like an Alpine Olympian in no time.
If you fancy ending your Swedish getaway in style, we can also arrange for you to head out on a snowshoeing excursion and enjoy dinner under the stars.
It’s sadly time to head home. This morning, you’ll be privately transferred to the airport to catch your flight to Stockholm, which takes around one hour and 20 minutes.
Once in Stockholm, board your international flight back to the UK. The journey will take just under three hours, leaving you just enough time to start planning your next winter getaway…
