Sweden’s wild west coast promises a tantalising taste of the great outdoors: boat trips with local fishermen, idyllic islands where colourful houses perch on rock outcrops, and small seafood restaurants serving the freshest of fish.

Upon arrival in Gothenburg, you’ll head straight to Sweden's sixth-largest island, Tjorn, where there’s plenty to keep outdoor lovers, as well as those with an interest in contemporary art, busy.

Your journey continues north to the village of Fiskebackskil, with its characterful waterfront houses, and the seaside city of Grebbestad, the northernmost point of the trip. Here, you’ll find more charming colourful houses, stunning sea views and ancient Stone Age remains.

On the way back down the coast to Gothenburg, we’ve included a stop off in Ljungskile, a popular spa town, where you can soak up the fresh air and spectacular views of the fjords, ending your trip on a high note.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Swedish adventure begins today. Head to the airport, breeze through security and relax in the lounge before your flight to Gothenburg which takes just under two hours.

When you arrive, collect your rental car and drive north to the island of Tjorn – an easy one-hour journey. Check into your hotel and settle in for two nights in the heart of the Stigfjord Nature Reserve, nestled among rocky islands, tranquil beaches and fertile valleys.

To kickstart your Swedish adventure, we’ve organised a relaxing sauna session. More than just a pastime, the sauna is a Nordic tradition that goes back over 2,000 years.

Sweden’s sixth-largest island is a paradise for nature lovers, home to a network of pretty hiking trails and a wonderful open-air gallery – asSkulptur i Pilane.

Today, we’ll arrange for you to explore the archipelago by kayak. To the north, you’ll find a picturesque harbour flanked by fishermen’s houses. Further on is one of the region’s most beautiful sandy beaches, which makes for an ideal picnic spot. Across the Ronnang Strait to the south, you can wind between the islands of the Algofjord.

Once you’re back on dry land, head back to your hotel to freshen up and then enjoy a delicious dinner in one of the island’s charming restaurants – your Concierge can recommend the best spots in town.

From one island to another, today you’ll leave Tjorn and make your way to Skaftolandet and the village of Fiskebackskil. As you head north, it’s well worth making a detour to visit the picturesque hamlet of Mollosund. Here, red and white fishermen’s huts line the water, and in the summer the streets are filled with colourful flowers.

When you arrive at your destination – about an hour’s drive away – set down your suitcases in a charming hotel on the water. Treat yourself to another sauna session with stunning sea views and then enjoy a delicious dinner.

Located at the entrance to the Gullmarn Fjord, this charming fishing village is home to colourful wooden houses and a quaint selection of shops, cafés and restaurants.

We’ve left today free for you to explore at your own pace. Spend some time exploring the nature reserves that dot the island or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a boat across to the village of Lysekil, on the opposite bank. Nestled between red granite rocks, Lysekil is a wonderful place for a stroll, punctuated by swimming stops in the many coves. There’s also a picturesque town centre with a saltwater aquarium. If you like, we can also arrange for you to take a guided bike ride around Skafto.

Today, continue north to Grebbestad, just over an hour away. Along the way, we can arrange for you to break up your journey with a boat trip and seafood tasting. Or, if you’d prefer to stay on dry land, stop off in the peaceful village of Fjallbacka, around six miles from Grebbestad. The port is home to a beautiful rose garden, an impressive 650ft-deep rock crevice and a mountain trail with spectacular views of the archipelago.

When you reach Grebbestad, check into you next property, a serene over-water guesthouse which will be your home from home for the next two nights.

Grebbestad has a reputation as a fishing haven, but don’t just take our word for it. Today, we’ve arranged for you to head out on a boat trip to try your hand at crab and mackerel fishing. First up: mackerel fishing, which is perfect for beginners. Next, head to the crab traps and watch the professionals at work before trying it out for yourself.

Your efforts won’t go unrewarded – the catch of the day tastes even more delicious when you’ve caught it yourself.

After lunch, explore the area at your own pace. You might want to head to the small island of Bohus-Malmon, where you can hike a scenic six-mile trail past sparkling lagoons and between fascinating remnants of the island’s days as a stone-cutting site. This is a great way to see the island, which is just two-and-a-half miles long and one mile wide. Don’t forget to pack your swimming gear so you can cool off along the way.

It’s almost time to start your gentle journey back down south. But before you do, we recommend one last northern stop. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed village of Vitlycke is just a few minutes’ drive away and is known for the 1,500 or so Bronze Age petroglyphs that adorn it.

Once you’ve admired these centuries-old carvings, drive on to Ljungskile – about 45 minutes from Vitlycke. You’ll spend your last night in Sweden nearby a magnificent fjord, the perfect place to round off your adventure.

Sadly, your adventure in Sweden draw to a close today. After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, drive 50 minutes back to Gothenburg, return your hire car and board your flight back to the UK.
