Scenically scattered across a series of islands, Stockholm is one of our favourite cities for a Big Short Break. So, set your sights on this Scandi showstopper and spend five days discovering the rich history and vibrant culture of the Swedish capital between bites of a cinnamon bun... or three.

With a conveniently central hotel as your base, you’ll have the whole city at your fingertips, from gorgeous Gamla Stan (that’s the ‘Old Town’ to us Brits) to more modern areas like Sodermalm, home to a hodgepodge of colourful buildings that are just begging to be featured on your Instagram feed.

When you’re not strolling along the city’s streets, settle down to sample a medley of authentic Scandinavian dishes in one of the world-class restaurants. One thing’s for sure: Stockholm is sure to leave a good taste in your mouth – and a hankering for more Scandi sojourns in your heart.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Today marks the beginning of your highly anticipated Big Short Break in Stockholm. Head to the airport, breeze through security and slip away to the lounge for some complimentary nibbles before take off. Flights to the Swedish capital take just under two and a half hours, giving you plenty of time to sit back, relax and dial up the holiday spirit.

After landing, hop aboard the Arlanda Express for a scenic train journey into Scandinavia's slickest city, taking no longer than 18 minutes. When you arrive at your hotel, check in, drop your bags and venture out for the first smorgas (open sandwich) or kanelbullar (cinnamon bun) of your trip.

Later, spend some time wandering through Stockholm’s labyrinth of twisting lanes before settling down for the evening in a chic waterside bistro or – if you fancy something really decadent – a renowned Michelin-starred restaurant.

After fuelling up on a hearty breakfast this morning, meet a friendly local for a private tour of the city, exploring a series of characterful alleys and squares while your guide shares captivating stories about Stockholm’s past.

With nothing set in stone, you’ll be free to let your curiosity lead the way, allowing you to be as spontaneous (or as picky) as you please. That said, it would be a shame to miss the photogenic facades of Sodermalm and the calm corners of Kungsholmen, so don’t forget to swing by these scenic spots.

To refuel after your wanderings this evening, ask your Concierge about the best restaurants for kottbullar (meatballs). A certified staple in the Swedish culinary scene – brought to global attention by none other than IKEA – these flavourful favourites are a must-try during your time here.

This morning is yours to spend as you please. Tuck into a pastry-packed breakfast before hitting the streets to poke around the hipster-filled boutiques that might have caught your eye earlier on. Prefer a dose of culture? The Vasa Museum is a surefire winner.

Then, just before sunset (which can be as early as 3pm in winter and as late as 10pm in summer), head to Langholmen Island, where you’ll hop on a kayak to paddle around the archipelago. Accompanied by a local guide, cruise out to some hidden spots while learning about the city’s relationship with the waterways.

Back on dry land, enjoy a well-earned barbecue on the beach for dinner, then return to your hotel, slip on an eye mask and sink into a pillow to rest up for the adventures of tomorrow.

The bridges that connect Stockholm’s islands make for the ultimate cycling playground. So, today, don a helmet, meet up with a local guide and prepare to explore a city that’s received the apt accolade: ‘a paradise for cyclists.’

Throughout, your guide will reveal the riches of Stockholm, including Djurgarden Park (part of the Grand Royal Urban National Park), the old town of Gamla Stan and the 19th-century Rosendal Palace, a pretty-in-pink (and extremely Instagrammable) gem.

When legs become weary this afternoon, enjoy yet another delicious smorgas before watching the evening roll in from one of our Concierge-recommended bars. Cue a chorus of skal (cheers)!

Sadly, the time has come to bid the beautiful streets of Stockholm a fond farewell. After one last tasty breakfast in the Swedish capital, hop back on the Arlanda Express to the airport, where you’ll board your international flight home.

The journey is another speedy two-and-a-half-hour jaunt, meaning you’ll be back in the UK before the sun sets on your Scandi sojourn.
