Located partly beyond the Arctic Circle, Lapland evokes images of snow-covered landscapes, dog sleds, freezing temperatures, and, of course, the magnificent Northern Lights. Yet, like the rest of Sweden, Lapland is not just a pristine winter paradise. It’s also a land of lush green forests, lakes and waterfalls, mountains and gulfs teeming with fascinating flora and fauna (much of which is protected in national parks). Even better, Swedish Lapland basks in the Midnight Sun during the summer months, so the sun will never set on your outdoor adventures.

Your 11-day adventure begins in Lulea, on the Gulf of Bothnia, from where you can easily reach the verdant heart of Lapland by road. Next, head to the peaceful village of Harads, where rivers meander through vast coniferous forests and ancient lakes shimmer. Then make your way further north to Kvikkjokk, a village popular with hikers surrounded by glacial valleys and flowery meadows. In fact, it’s the starting point of the Kungsleden trek, the ‘King's Trail’, a historic path known as one of the most beautiful hiking routes in the world.

Next, you’ll reach Jokkmokk, whose cultural centre recounts the resilient history of the Sami people. After a detour to Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost city, experience local life in Gallivare.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

It's time to head to the airport – your magical journey begins with a two-and-a-half-hour flight to Stockholm. When you arrive, speed through airport formalities before your short onward flight to Lulea (the flight time is around one hour and 20 minutes), a coastal city in Swedish Lapland.

When you land, pick up your hire car and drive to your accommodation on the water's edge. Unwind at your accommodation this afternoon or head to the sauna for some traditional relaxation (you’ve earned it).

This morning, take in the beauty of your extraordinary setting from a kayak on the Gulf of Bothnia. Accompanied by a guide, paddle peacefully in the protected shallow bays until you reach one of the archipelago's 1,300 islands. Dismount here for a stroll and keep your eyes peeled for animals such as seals, seagulls, sea eagles and – if you're lucky – elk. Then head back to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon enjoying your scenic surroundings.

Today, enjoy an encounter with the moose of Cape Wild alongside a private guide. In the heart of the Swedish forest, your guide will reveal the secrets of these fascinating mammals, teaching you how to spot them in the wild and giving you a better understanding of these animals' impressive resilience in the Lappish wilderness. You’ll get up close and personal with them, as well as meet some adorable reindeer in a small sanctuary.

Next, it’s a one-hour drive to Harads, following the meanders of the Lulealven River. Along the way, stop in the Church Town of Gammelstad to admire this well-preserved 15th-century village and designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

Drive to Kvikkjokk (around a two-and-a-half-hour drive) and check in for two nights at your chalet-style accommodation. The surroundings are magnificent in every season, and on-site, you can enjoy a sauna and hot tub too – the perfect place for soaking up the scenic views.

If you’d like to explore the surrounding forest today, we can arrange an optional horseback riding excursion with an experienced guide.

Kvikkjokk is located at the start of the famous Kungsleden, the ‘King’s Trail’, an almost 250-mile-long path connecting Hemavan to Abisko. Today is your chance to hike a portion of the historic route, established in the late 19th century and considered one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world. Winding through stunning mountain scenery and alpine meadows, the trail offers unparalleled views of sparkling glaciers, rushing streams, gorges, and some of Sweden's most beautiful birch forests.

Wave goodbye to Kvikkjokk today and head to Jokkmokk for an overnight stay, which should take just under an hour and a half to reach. This area is known for its rich Sami history, so don't miss visiting the Sami cultural centre of Ajtte, whose permanent exhibition tells the story of Sami life through a large collection of objects, clothing and photographs. Just a stone's throw away is Fjalltradgarden, a garden dedicated to Arctic botany which stretches along the roaring Kvarnbacken River, just south of Lake Talvatis. Take a wander along the trail to admire some incredible plant species, including a rare wildflower known as King Karl's Sceptre.

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel this morning, make the three-and-a-half-hour drive to Abisko, a small town on the edge of the eponymous national park. We recommend breaking up the journey with a fabulous lunch at the Aurora Sky Station, a high-altitude restaurant reached by a chairlift that overlooks Abisko National Park (leave the reservations to us). Once settled in front of the crackling fire, enjoy a feast of traditional Lappish cuisine, and take in the view of the valley, lake, rivers and mountains from the terrace. If you're in the mood for a post-lunch walk, take a stroll along one of the area's many hiking trails to spot wildlife or take in the impressive views.

You'll spend the next two nights in a cosy lodge near Abisko National Park – the perfect location to make the most of the park’s plentiful hiking trails tomorrow.

Your hotel is perfectly positioned to access the park’s hiking trails, so rise and shine early this morning to make the most of your day here. One of the most scenic routes is the trail to Lake Trollsjon, which first passes through a thick birch forest before gaining height and leading you into the Karkevagge ('stone valley', in Sami). You'll be rewarded for your efforts with magnificent views: picture a valley dotted with imposing boulders carried by ancient glacial rivers.

The rest of the walk leads you through delightful mountain landscapes and lush meadows full of wildflowers that congregate on the gentle slopes. After about three-and-a-half hours of walking, you'll reach the high-altitude lake of Trollsjon, known as Rissajaure in Sami, which means 'the lake that sparkles like fire’. Its waters are the clearest in the country, and in good weather, you can see all the way to the bottom at 130ft below the surface. This enchanting spot is ideal for a picnic lunch break or even a refreshing dip...

Your next stop is in the Gallivare region, located at the crossroads of four large national parks: Sarek, Padjelanta, Stora Sjofallet and Muddus. Along the way, we recommend a stop at Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost town. Here, you'll find a fascinating church built in 1912 to resemble a Sami hut (a lavvu), covered entirely with red wooden tiles. Inside is an incredible painting that adorns the Art Nouveau altar: a work by Prince Eugen entitled the Holy Grove. Then, continue on to the town hall, recognisable by its tower, clock and futuristic architecture.

You'll spend tonight in a traditional lodge outside the small village of Nilivaara.

Today, it’s time to head back to Lulea for your final night in Sweden (the drive takes around three hours).

This evening, head to your hotel’s chic lounge bar for cocktails and live music, where you can toast to a summer holiday well spent.

Your adventure in Swedish Lapland has sadly come to an end. Today, head back to the airport to return your hire car and fly home via Stockholm.

The flight from Lulea to Stockholm is around one hour and 20 minutes, followed by a two-hour onward flight back to the UK.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

PRIVATE SWEDISH SAUNA EXPERIENCE IN LULEA

This Nordic social and family tradition dates back over 2,000 years, and it's a must when visiting Sweden. Saunas aren't just a way to relax; the Swedish sauna experience has therapeutic properties, including improved blood circulation, aches and pains. To enjoy it safely, keep well hydrated and don't stay in there longer than 20 minutes.

GUIDED HORSERIDING IN THE FOREST IN HARADS

Riding through the Lappish forest is one of the most beautiful ways to enjoy its beauty without disturbing nature. You'll have two hours to soak up your surroundings and learn more about local flora and fauna while on a guided horse ride.

WITH A FEW MORE DAYS...

THE TORNEDALEN REGION

By extending your trip, you can explore Lapland's border region of Tornedalen. You'll visit Kukkola, a charming hamlet located where the Torne River separates Finland and Sweden, before ending its course in the Baltic Sea. Here, locals have been fishing?sik?(whitefish) with nets since the Middle Ages. Once caught, the fish is grilled on a stick over an open fire. Take a journey back in time as you witness this traditional practice, along with visiting the 19th-century mill and 18th-century smokehouse.
