Accessible by boat, Playa Cativo ticks all the boxes when it comes to a beach/jungle stay. Surrounded by Piedras Blancas National Park and across from Osa Peninsula and Corcovado, this eco-lodge offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in nature whilst combining a bit of R & R.

There are just seven en suite guestrooms at Playa Cativo, all of which are elegantly furnished with both beach or ocean views and all the mod-cons and amenities a seasoned luxury traveller might expect. We are also rather fond of their rain showers!

A five minute walk up the beach will take you to the hotel's very own organic farm, where you can hand pick your own fresh lettuce and vegetables for dinner, which is served overlooking the gulf. The chef creates a variety of local recipes, vegetarian options and international dishes. Meals can also be enjoyed with a good quality wine or cocktail concocted to personal taste. Its beachfront location is dangerously romantic, so be warned.

Playa Cativo offers an unrivalled opportunity to spend a few days in some of the most unspoilt rainforest in the world. Whether guests want to execute their kayaking skills in the Rio Esquinas Mangrove-Ocean, hike in the Piedras Blancas Nature, partake on a guided expedition to the Nocturnal Rainforest, head to the beach or wetlands, snorkel Golfo Dulce, paddle board or venture off in search of dolphins and whales, the possibilities are, incredibly, endless.

For less active pursuits the sandy beach on the Lodge's doorstep is perfect to retreat to, that is, if the fresh-water swimming pool hasn't lured you in first. We also recommend exploring the gardens which are alive with exotic birds, tropical mammals and butterflies fluttering about - sounds almost untrue, we know, but fortunately it is that idyllic.

Why we love it

This lodge gets a gold star for Eco friendliness - it was built using precious indigenous wood salvaged from an older lodge and a fallen-tree programme and, fittingly, each of its comfortable rooms has been decorated using reclaimed hardwood and colourful tile works crafted by local artisans.
