You're down to the final slice of Turkey and fighting over the last mince pie but instead of feeling sad that Christmas is over, why not book yourself an epic holiday for Christmas 2020? It may seem a long way off, but trust us when we say that places start getting booked up fast. So seize this as an opportunity to banish those January blues, and check out some of our favourite places for Christmas holidays...
For a destination that is Christmassy to the core, book a trip to Lapland. A wonderful place for children big and small, you'll be swept away by the magical combination of Northern Lights seeking, dog sledding and snowmobiling around the stunning Lulea archipelago. After a day of adrenalin-fuelled adventures, nothing beats gathering around a camp fire for some lunch in the forest. Tuck into tasty treats cooked over the flames and keep an eye out for any moose and reindeer who may want to join you. Feeling romantic? We can organise for you to have a candlelit dinner cooked for you on the ice, with a crackling fire to keep you warm.
If you'd prefer a balmy beach break to a wintery wonderland, then head to Thailand. With temperatures hovering at a toasty 30 degrees in December, Thailand is an extremely popular option for a festive escape, so we recommend booking well in advance for a Christmas 2020 holiday. Head to the country's idyllic east coast and you'll discover wonderful white sand beaches and bath-warm turquoise waters as well as a smattering of first-class luxury resorts. If you're after more than sun, sea and sensational beaches Chiang Mai is well worth a visit. Despite meaning 'New City' this area has a fascinating 700-year-old history, and as the centre of Buddhism in Northern Thailand, it boasts over 300 temples and religious structures. When you're had your fill of cultural curiosities, we can arrange everything from jungle elephant trekking, temple touring and white-water rafting.
Man oh man we love Oman when it comes to Christmas - another great option for those whose idea of a white Christmas involves a white sand beach. We suggest starting off in majestic Muscat, where you simply must pay a visit to the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. The splendid structure can accommodate 20,000 worshippers at a time and is achingly ornate on the inside, housing the world's largest hand-woven Persian rug and second largest chandelier. It is one of the only mosques in the country which allows non-Muslim visitors, so be mindful to dress respectfully when visiting, and women must cover their hair. After your culture fix, head to the Salalah - home to several splendid palm tree-lined beaches where you can snorkel away your days and spend your evenings gorging on fantastically fresh seafood.
When it comes to Christmas 2020 holidays, pretty much anywhere in the Caribbean provides you with a classic getaway, but we have a particularly soft spot for Grenada. A great option for families, Grenada is all about mixing beach time with cultural excursions. The capital, St George's, is generally thought to be the most attractive in the Caribbean, and it's almost impossible not to buy into the laidback lifestyle of the locals. Grenada is also home to the world's first underwater sculpture park which is easy to snorkel to from shore and is guaranteed to delight and excite any water babies in the family. We can also arrange trips to the north of the island where you can learn about how organic chocolate is made on a visit to the Belmont Heritage Estate, a 17th century plantation with acres of cocoa and nutmeg trees, a fascinating tree-to-bar tour and a wonderful farm-to-table restaurant.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town may not be a place that immediately springs to mind when considering Christmas 2020 holidays, but the list of positives is long - it's malaria free, there's a minimal time difference (important to consider when travelling with sprogs), and its bursting at the seams with epic wildlife, jaw-dropping coastlines and buzzing cities. The Winelands is one of our favourite areas, where you can keep up the Christmas tradition of stuffing yourself silly with delicious food and wine, all while sitting in the sun surrounded by beautiful landscapes. We can also arrange for you to go on a festive safari. Head to the Eastern Cape Reserve and you can see the Big Five (rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo) and brush up on your photographic skills with the help of a photographer who can accompany you into the bush and teach you how to get that perfect wildlife shot.
