Thanjavur holidays are a journey back through time - to the 11th century, when the great Chola kings ruled, and built the first of several imposing temples to honour their gods. The most famous temple Brihadishvara is dedicated to the god Shiva, and is one of the most impressive of all India. Featuring a central pyramid-shaped tower reaching to over 200 feet high, the temple is adorned with sculptures and rare, stunning frescoes. It is no surprise that this is a UNESCO world heritage site. But Thanjavur (formerly known as Tanjore) is also a great place to learn about Carnatic music, considered the oldest music in the world,
and a great speciality of this part of southern India.
