Beana Laponia is a boutique, adult only hotel in the Finnish wilderness away from most light pollution, in the perfect location for spotting the Northern Lights and star lit dog sledding.

Completely isolated from the outside world, yet just a 45 minute drive from Rovaniemi, Beana Laponia (pronounced bee-na, didn't you know?) is ideal for those looking for a Big Short Break. The cosy lodge has just 11 rooms, each of which has been carefully designed by the hosts, Malla and Aki. Incidentally, Aki is one of Finland's best long distance mushers, and dog sledding is at the heart of the property's ethos. The rooms are contemporary and comfortable with plenty of exposed wood and the husky theme continues into the room's art work. Rooms vary in size from the smaller Beana Rooms up to the Laponia Suite with its own private sauna, which is ideal for honeymooners. There is an intimate bar area with fireplace and the restaurant serves delicious home cooked meals based on locally sourced produce.

Outdoors, the onsite husky kennel means you have adventure on your door step and can meet (play with) the dogs before you head off. The husky safaris run along the hotel's private trails past frozen rivers, across fells, and through snow-capped forests showcasing the region's beautiful wilderness scenery. For those who want to take things back to basics, you can do a multi- day dog sledding adventure, sleeping in the simplest of cabins with no running water and an outhouse toilet, but heated by a traditional wood fired sauna to keep you toasty. Other activities include a guided Aurora Borealis hunting walk, a visit to a reindeer farm with a short sleigh ride, and snowmobiling. In between activities, guests have access to snow shoes; forest skis; kick sledges and toboggans to use as they wish on the neighbouring trails and the hotel's own toboggan slope.

If you prefer to take things at a slower pace, you can book the sauna for private use and make use of both the indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, perfect for something romantic and unique - particularly if the Northern Lights choose to make an appearance. Talking of Northern Lights, if the predictions are good, guests are often advised to walk up to the small Laavu tent at the top of the fell, where you can light a small fire and enjoy the show.

Why we love it

Beana Laponia's small size and isolation mean it's the ideal place to spend a few days getting away from it all and enjoying the Narnia-esque Finnish winter wonderland.

Hullu Poro Penthouse

Located in the heart of Levi, the Hullu Poro Penthouse is the most luxurious place to stay in town, and the ideal solution for families not keen on the idea of staying in igloos, cabins or snow hotels.

Arctic Snow Hotel

Arctic Snow Hotel

The Arctic Snow Hotel, near the Finnish Lapland centre of Rovaniemi, is, in our humble opinion, the best accommodation in the vicinity of the town. This is probably less of a family-friendly place than many of our other Lapland options, but great for couples looking to experience the magic of Lapland.
