Train Travel Africa

With trains that snake alongside the Nile from Alexandria to Aswan in Egypt; routes linking the key cities in East Africa’s Kenya and Tanzania; and numerous tracks that crisscross the south of the continent, including across Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia and South Africa, train travel in Africa is an excellent – and underrated – way to explore some of our favourite African destinations.

While we're big fans of the glamorous Steam Ship Sudan which cruises the Nile in Egypt, there is also a train that follows the same route, stopping at some of the country's cultural highlights along the way, including Quena, Luxor, Esna and Aswan, all full to the brim with history and culture.

A little further south in the continent you'll find the much-improved Nairobi to Mombasa train in Kenya, which crosses over the Kapiti Plains and Tsavo National Park (meaning some excellent wildlife spotting opportunities from the comfort of your train seat); as well as the 46-hour train between Tanzania's Dar es Salaam and Zambia's Kapiri Mposhi which passes through wildlife-rich areas and scenic mountainous landscapes (don't worry, there are sleeper cabins available).

Perhaps the most famous train routes in Africa are those plied by Rovos Rail. While they have quite a few routes running across Southern Africa, some of our favourites include the trip from Pretoria to Victoria Falls which passes through both Botswana and Zimbabwe; the Royal Livingstone - a totally luxurious dining train that takes you on a return trip from Livingstone to the Victoria Falls Bridge to see the sights with a delicious dinner; and the delightful journey between Pretoria in the north of the country, right down to Cape Town on the South African south coast.

Whatever you Africa train travel dreams are, our team of experts are on hand to help you to create a tailor-made itinerary to suit you. Once you're actually on your enviably exciting journey, our local Concierges in each country are on hand to help with any recommendations or last minute requests, whether that's help with booking train tickets or restaurant recommendations for a spontaneous dinner in one of your destinations.
