Costa Rica Winter Sun Holidays

As gloomy winter weather descends on the UK, Costa Rica awaits across the Atlantic Ocean with clear blue skies and warmer climes. The country’s dry season runs from December to April, thankfully coinciding with our potential period of January blues, making Costa Rica winter sun holidays the ideal antidote. Temperatures can soar as high as 35°C and tend to hover around 28°C, inviting balmy beach days, water-based activities and sunset-streaked evenings. Costa Rica is especially apt for wave riders, who can spend sunny days splashing through the frothy surf and harnessing the consistent swells. The country’s dry season is generally regarded as the best time to visit this Central American gem, so really there’s no excuse not to chase some winter sun in Costa Rica. The chillier climate back home will be a distant memory as you trek through steamy rainforests, bathe in hot springs at the base of Arenal Volcano and stumble upon secluded beaches fringed with swaying palms. You’ll be accompanied by equally sun-loving wildlife; see caimans basking in the shallows of the wetlands and watch colourful quetzals soaring overhead in the tropical forests. So if the sound of some Costa Rica winter sun has appealed to your summer-loving side, leave your winter clothes firmly at the back of your wardrobe and grab your sun hut.

"The Lapa Rios Nature Reserve was particularly memorable. I felt like I never wanted to leave. When we finally did I felt then and do now that I left a bit of my heart behind. The Concierge was terrific."

"Oliver couldn’t have been more helpful - we had a very specific, and not totally simple, brief and timeline. Oliver’s experience in the area was very clear and he created a fantastic itinerary for us. As to the trip itself - it was totally magical. The quality of the concierge and tour guides was top notch - the latter was a big part of the trip (we went on numerous tours) and added hugely to the success of the trip. Activities were spot on for our boys. Best were humpback whale watching for us, zip-lining for the boys! Family rooms and suites were great too, so we could all be together. The modem was a great touch and very useful. The app - and all the information within it - was also great. Victor the Concierge was wonderful - from providing us with local currency so we could use a toll bridge as we left San Jose, to sending us regular route updates and restaurant recommendations. Lounge access is always a fab touch! And the meet and greet takes away all the stress of trying to work out logistics when arriving somewhere new. Both add to the feeling of R&R. All in all, Original Travel were superb!"

What can you expect on Costa Rica winter sun holidays that you won’t find anywhere else?

Winter sun in Costa Rica promises to replenish your vitamin D levels and spark your sense of adventure. See a wealth of wildlife in one go while hiking around Corcovado National Park, or go humpback whale watching along the Caribbean coast in January. Try your hand at all sorts of water sports on the beaches of the Pacific coast, or sip on a fruity cocktail as the sun sinks beneath the horizon. With so much to see and do during Costa Rica winter sun holidays, you could easily skip out on the whole of the winter season back home.

Who are Costa Rica winter sun holidays best for?

Anyone with a craving for some sun, sand and sea, looking to escape colder climes and boost morale. Costa Rica really does tick all of the boxes when it comes to sunshine destinations: a tropical climate, comfortable eco lodges and a generous dose of high octane adventure. Play on the playas (beaches), with surfing, kayaking and snorkelling on offer; relish the humidity of the rainforests, as resplendent birdlife floats on the balmy breeze overhead; settle down on the powder-soft sand, with a good book in hand and the sun warming your skin.

Special things to do during Costa Rica winter sun holidays:

Sky Tram in Arenal

Ride the Sky Tram gondolas through the rainforest canopy of Arenal National Park, keeping your eyes peeled for sloths, birds and butterflies as you glide through your treetops. Adrenaline-seekers can opt for the more adventurous method of transportation, by ziplining through the forest.

Pacific & Caribbean Beaches

It’s no secret that you’re here for the sunshine, so you might as well make the most of it on the sublime beaches found on both coastlines. Some standouts of the Pacific coast include Playa Tamarindo, Nosara and Playa Conchal, while the Caribbean coast plays host to Punta Uva, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and Playa Cocles.

Volunteer at a Wildlife Rescue Centre

Proyecto Asis works to protect wildlife, rehabilitate them and conserve their natural habitats, in the Alajuela Province. On a tour and volunteering combo you'll have the chance to encounter the wildlife at the centre, prepare their food and clean out their enclosures. Recent releases back into the wild following successful rehabilitation include monkeys, anteaters, sloths, squirrels, toucans and hawks.

Water sports in Nosara

Renowned as one of the country’s top surfing spots, you can combine active water sports (such as diving, swimming, surfing and fishing), with chilled out yoga classes in Nosara, on the Nicoya Peninsula. The beaches here are nothing short of spectacular and lend themselves to winter sun in Costa Rica.

Best time to visit for winter sun in Costa Rica

Lucky for us Brits, Costa Rica’s dry season falls during our winter – from December to April – meaning it’s the perfect winter sun destination. As temperatures plummet back home, things are heating up (and drying off) in this pint-sized nation, and while there are some regional variations, this is generally the best time to visit. The dry season is most pronounced on the Pacific coast, with a distinct lack of rainfall, yet slightly shorter on the Caribbean side. It’s worth noting that December and January can sometimes still be rainy throughout the country, so be prepared for unexpected showers interrupting your winter sun if you visit during these months.
