Footsteps Delta Camp is a traditional Botswanan safari camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Their ingenious Young Explorers private safari experience is one of the best family focused safari programmes out there and makes this one of our favourite camps to take youngsters to.
The three spacious twin-bedded Meru tents are kitted out with en-suite facilities, hot water bucket showers and porcelain flush toilets. The accommodation is both comfortable and cosy, with sewn-floors, solar panel electricity, and extensive views of the stunning surroundings. Footsteps Camp favours simplicity but not at the expensive of comfort, offering guests an authentic experience in an untamed area of Botswana, free from the distractions of the modern world.
Watch the chef prepare meals in the camps 'bush kitchen', with food cooked over an open wood fire. For a romantic meal for two, exclusive dining options are available, and guests can sit on the viewing deck and enjoy delicious food by candlelight.
Footsteps Camp invites guests to discover the wonders of the Okavango Delta on foot, and visitors delight in up-close experiences with the wildlife of the bush. From elephants and lions to zebras and wild dogs, the wealth of wildlife in the Delta is extraordinary and other possible ways to explore the area include game drives, Mokoro tours, and fishing trips. Even without leaving the camps, visitors have the chance to see the resident hippos pass through the camp from a neighbouring pool.
For families, the Young Explorers programme, which is specially designed to offer the opportunity to discover the wonders of the African wilderness together, is the ultimate bush bonding experience. During a Young Explorers private safari the emphasis is on teaching children the basics of bushcraft; be that from tracking game on foot and in 4x4 safari vehicles to making small animal traps and learning how to start a fire from nothing more than two sticks. Other activities include learning to recognise different animal spoor as well as bird species. Your rug rats will be bush babies for life after this trip.
Please note the Young Explorers programme is also available at Shinde Enclave camp.
Young explorers can try their hand at poling a mokoro canoe, driving a game drive vehicle, fishing and shooting an air rifle at tin cans and at the end of the course the children receive a Young Explorers certificate and t-shirt or cap. Jealous daddies can have one too if they ask nicely.
