Why do you love Japan so much?

Having lived in both the East and the West, including spending time in Tokyo and Hong Kong, Japan has always felt very personal to me. What I love most is the level of dedication people bring to whatever they do. Whether it’s perfecting a craft, mastering a single dish, preserving traditions, or even just pursuing a personal interest, there’s an incredible attention to detail and pride in doing things well. I think this is what makes Japanese hospitality so special – the small, thoughtful gestures that make you feel truly looked after.

When did you first visit Japan and what was your first impression?

As a toddler – on a family trip to Tokyo Disneyland. Throughout my childhood, I visited different parts of Japan on family holidays, guided tours and road trips. Even from a young age, the hospitality and politeness left an impression. Train staff, restaurant staff and shop assistants would all bow and everywhere you go is clean and orderly whether it’s a big city or a small village.

How much time have you spent in Japan?

I lived in Japan for almost five years and have visited numerous times since then.

What’s been your most memorable experience in Japan?

I visited the off-the-beaten-path region of Toyama on a research trip and was blown away by the scenery, food and local culture. The people here live in harmony with nature and have a unique culture tied to the weather and seasons which was fascinating to learn about. I thought I knew Japan quite well, but this trip revealed a side of the country I’d never encountered before.

What would be your top recommendation for someone visiting Japan for the first time?

I would always try to include a ryokan stay if possible, as it’s one of the best ways to experience Japanese hospitality. Staying in a traditional setting, soaking in onsen baths, and enjoying beautifully prepared local food make for a really special experience. These Japanese inns are quite different from a typical luxury hotel but that’s exactly the point. They perfectly encapsulate Japanese hospitality: nothing flashy or over-the-top, just thoughtful details, genuine care, and a deep respect for tradition.

What’s your insider tip?

Balance the iconic highlights with time spent in lesser-known regions. Some of the most memorable moments happen in places you won’t necessarily find online. Don’t overload your itinerary with restaurant reservations. There are so many amazing places in Japan to try, but often the best spots aren’t the ones you can easily find online. Leave yourself some flexibility to discover local gems along the way. Also, keep in mind that reservations in Japan are taken very seriously. Last-minute cancellations can come with hefty fees, so it’s better to stay open to spontaneous culinary adventures.

What’s been your best foodie experience in Japan?

I watched the crab auction live at the market, and just 30 minutes later I was eating it. It was the biggest, freshest crab I have ever had.

What’s the one local dish you have to try while in Japan?

Hands down, nothing beats fresh local seafood, especially served as sashimi!

Is there somewhere you haven’t visited yet that you’d love to go?

So many places! There’s a challenge called ‘Conquering all 47 Prefectures of Japan’ and I think I’m now up to 33. Okinawa is the main region that I haven’t visited yet. My sister has been there and still talks about the beautiful sea views.

Is Japan somewhere to go to as a couple or with family?

Japan has something for everyone and is a great destination year-round. I’ve travelled there solo, as a couple, with family, and with friends and every trip has been amazing in its own unique way.
