Greece offers an incredible variety of landscapes and experiences from historic mainland sites to diverse island groups, all tied together by delicious food and warm hospitality. I love how every visit to Greece, you can have a completely different type of trip whether you want to relax in a beautiful beach resort, experience local life in Greek tavernas or hire a car and explore ancient archaeological sites.
I’ve visited Greece over ten times for both holidays and research trips, giving me extensive first-hand knowledge of destinations across the country.
For now… Naxos. We stayed a ten-minute drive outside of town, near to the seaside village of Agios Prokopios. Some evenings we drove into Chora (the beautiful main town) and other nights we relaxed in beachfront restaurants nearer to our hotel. We also drove inland to Apeiranthos, a gorgeous mountain village which felt wonderfully authentic. The views on the way there were just spectacular and we had the best Naxian potatoes and cheese in a local taverna there.
It’s hard to pinpoint my most memorable experience as there have been far too many! I know it sounds very cliché, but watching the sun set over the caldera in Santorini for the first time was magical and something I’ll always remember.
Hire a car! Public transport is poor and having a car gives you the flexibility to explore local fishing villages, tavernas and beaches, completely transforming your experience.
Explore with a knowledgeable guide. They can bring historic sites to life and give you a deeper understanding of the places you visit. In Olympia for example, there aren’t many information plaques so it’s hard to know what you’re looking at. Having a guide adds huge value.
There have been so many! I love the Naxos gourmet tour we did where we walked around with a guide trying lots of traditional local food. The guides know places only the locals go and I’d never have found them myself.
I love loukoumades (small deep fried dough balls which are usually soaked in honey and topped with cinnamon).
Crete. The combination of culture, history, beaches and beautiful landscapes means there’s always something new to discover. The eastern side of the island is completely different to the west and having two different airports means it’s easy to just visit one part at a time.
Both! Greece works brilliantly for milestone celebrations, family adventures and romantic escapes alike.
