Built in the middle of Man Sagar Lake in the Pink City of Jaipur, Jal Mahal literally translates to ‘Water Palace’. This picturesque palace was originally designed as a hunting lodge for the king and his entourage during their duck hunting trips, but it was instead used as a private retreat for noble couples (and with its romantic setting, it’s easy to see why). Designed in a classic Rajput style, the palace has a pink sandstone façade with a symmetrical design; but there’s also a hidden twist. Jal Mahal appears to have just one floor, but it’s actually a five-story palace — each level submerged lower into the lake.
The palace is not only a beautiful structure but also a great example of engineering, specially designed with lime mortar to hold back millions of litres of water. Marvel at this magnificent exhibit of craftsmanship and the surrounding Nahargarh hills from the banks of the Sagar Lake and enjoy the tranquillity of this wonderful place away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
