Set in a 3.5 mile private lagoon on the beach-fringed island of Medhufaru, Soneva Jani is the brand’s newest resort, opened in October 2016. Part of a five-island cluster in the Noonu Atoll, the other four islands remain untouched, while Soneva Jani itself is one of the lowest density resorts in the world.
Just 25 villas are spread across five kilometres, offering 24 water villas and one island villa, all with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and each opening to its own stretch of pristine lagoon. Every villa has a private pool and some feature slides plunging from the top decking area into the lagoon below. The outdoor decks are complete with sun loungers and sunken tables, providing an ideal area for enjoying leisurely lunches or for spending a relaxing afternoon catching the rays. Built using high quality sustainable materials, these villas have an authentic feel and mirror the beauty of the natural surroundings.
There will be no shortage of variety when dining at Soneva Jani, with global cuisine served at five dining outlets. The Gathering lies at the heart of the resort, offering fresh juices and hand-picked fruits for breakfast. Throughout the day, guests can choose from a range of dishes, including everything from wood-fired pizzas to freshly caught and grilled to order seafood. Soneva's much loved cheese, chocolate and ice-cream rooms will feature at the resort and destination dining experiences can also be arranged. For a romantic evening meal, guests can head to The Observatory and enjoy a spot of stargazing alongside delicious cuisine.
Water babies will be in their element at this lagoon resort, which is rich in marine life and the perfect place for kayaking, sailing or swimming. For adventurers, there is a dive centre and dolphin cruises are also a popular activity amongst visitors. Back on dry land, the pretty organic gardens are worth visiting, or alternatively, enjoy a cycle along the many trails that wind through the surrounding tropical greenery. The outdoor Cinema Paradiso will be the first 'silent cinema' in the Maldives and visitors will watch films using Bluetooth earphones, so that the area's nesting wildlife remains undisturbed. For those afternoons when you need to simply lie back and relax, visit the resort's spa and indulge in a treatment or two.
In each villa the master bedroom features a retractable roof which slides back at the press of a button, so guests can lie in bed and stargaze. However, should it start raining, the roof will automatically close.
