Despite having a reputation as an ‘adults only’ destination, Laamu Atoll offers a range of activities for youngsters. Watch as your youngsters learn all about local marine life during a Junior Marine Biologist course, try their hand at paddleboarding or windsurfing and make new friends at the screen-free beachfront kids’ club, allowing you to relax on the sand, indulge in pampering spa treatments and enjoy a cocktail at the bar.

Of course, there’ll be plenty of room for quality time together, from guided snorkelling trips to simply building sandcastles on the beach. Be warned, though: once the children have got a taste of island life, it may not be long before you return…

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Have your bags packed and passports at the ready: your family adventure to the Maldives starts today. Head to the airport, whizz through security and settle in for some nibbles before boarding your overnight flight to Male. With a quick connection in the Middle East, the journey will take around 13 hours, but don’t worry: we’ll arm the children with family fun packs to keep them entertained.

After landing early the next morning, you’ll be met and escorted to a seaplane – sure to impress even tired youngsters – for the one-hour flight to Laamu Atoll. Make sure the children have window seats – they won’t want to miss the views over the sparkling sea and powdery beaches.

When you arrive, check into your resort and drop your bags in your luxurious overwater room. You’ll likely be tired after all that travelling, so spend the rest of the day relaxing before a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Today is all about easing yourself into island life. Begin the day with a tasty breakfast, playing I-Spy for tropical reef fish and rays as you wander over the resort’s wooden bridges, then spend the rest of the morning however you please: take a dip in the sparkling sea, try your hand at paddleboarding or windsurfing or simply spend time building a good old-fashioned sandcastle.

If you fancy a little R&R, drop your little ones off at the resort’s kids’ club, a miniature island village where youngsters can make new friends and embark on screen-free adventures. While they’re busy on a beachfront treasure hunt, indulge in a relaxing treatment at the spa, stroll along the shore or simply lounge poolside – it’s entirely up to you.

Come evening, scoop up the little ones and tuck into a delicious dinner before ending the night with an ice cream from the on-site parlour. You’ll likely have some very happy children on your hands…

Now that you’re well and truly into the swing of things, the real fun can begin. Whether you already have a brood of water babies or yours are a little unsure, the Maldives is the perfect place to ease the children into the underwater world, and Laamu takes it one step further: today, we can arrange for your youngsters to take part in a Junior Marine Biology course with the on-site Maldives Underwater Initiative (MIU) team of marine biologists.

During the two-hour course, they’ll learn all about local marine life and sustainability initiatives through mentoring, classroom learning and exciting guided snorkelling trips. By the end of the day, they’ll have earned a certificate and, hopefully, a newfound appreciation for ocean adventures.

Later, enjoy a delicious sundowner (mocktails for the little ones, of course), complete with excited chatter about colourful coral reefs and magical marine life.

It’s time to put your children’s newfound knowledge to the test. After a hearty breakfast, meet another of the MUI team’s seasoned marine biologists for an exciting snorkelling expedition at Laamu’s world-class reefs.

After a brief introduction to the local marine life, your expert guide will help you all mask up ready to glide over the reef barrier, just steps from the shore. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for neon fish, cute turtles and even sleek manta rays, which can be spotted year-round in this incredible part of the world.

Back on solid ground, your guide will answer any questions you might have about the underwater ecosystem and provide insights into the marine life you’ve encountered. The rest of the afternoon is then yours for the taking , whether you’d rather spend it on the sea or in the sand.

We’ve left today (mostly) free for you to enjoy. If the children just can’t get enough of the water, feel free to spend the day snorkelling, kayaking or, if they enjoyed their Junior Marine Biologist experience, taking part in the PADI Bubblemaker programme, a diving course specially designed for youngsters aged eight years and up. If they’re all dived out and angling to reunite with their newfound friends at the kid’s club, indulge in a cocktail or two at the swim-up bar – you are on holiday, after all.

Come evening, we can arrange for you to hop aboard a private dhoni boat for a guided cruise around Laamu’s best dolphin-spotting sites. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled and cameras poised as these playful creatures skim the water beside the boat, creating a magical sunset scene that looks as if it’s been pulled straight from Finding Nemo.

Dive resorts in the Maldives often have sustainability close to their hearts, and yours is no exception. Today, we’ve arranged a behind-the-scenes tour of the resort, offering both parents and children alike a glimpse into the carefully planned resource utilisation at the hotel, from water conservation to glass recycling. You’ll also have the chance to meet local community members and learn about their work.

After a tasty lunch, head back to the beach or the pool for an afternoon of swimming and sunbathing.

You might be staying in a beautiful island in the Maldives, but you've certainly been kept busy over the last week – so, for your final day, we've factored in some time for a little bit of good old fashioned R&R. Splash in the pool, relax on the sand or let the children pay one last visit to the kid’s club while you enjoy a few pampering spa treatments (that’s a win-win situation, if you ask us).

If you’re looking for something really special to round off your trip, we can arrange a private picnic on a deserted island just 25 minutes from Laamu. After an exciting game of I-Spy from the boat, disembark and settle into the shade of coconut trees with a delicious picnic and an ice-cold bottle of wine for the adults. You can stay on the island for however long you’d like, lounging in the sun or swimming in the crystal-clear water, before heading back to your hotel for one final evening.

Sadly, the time has come to say goodbye to Laamu. Today, swap your sandals for shoes and board the seaplane for your one-hour flight back to Male airport, where you’ll catch your final flight home.

With another quick layover, the journey back to the UK will take between 13 and 20 hours, touching down the next morning. Just enough time for your youngsters to convince you to return…
