Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday
When you're short on time, a city break is a great option for a romantic holiday. Bergen, on Norway's southwestern coast, is utterly magical at this time of year. Surrounded by towering mountains and sparkling fjords, the city has a fairy-tale feel any time of year but especially during the winter with its cosy cafes, cobbled streets and twinkling fairy lights. Lisbon too, is a great pick with its foodie markets and low-lit wine bars and Berlin is a firm favourite with its countless winter festivals which you can explore with a mug of glühwein (mulled wine) in hand.
If you really want to get into the winter spirit, nothing beats a romantic winter weekend break to Swedish Lapland which is only a short flight away. With days spent dog-sledding and snow-shoeing and evenings spent chasing the Northern Lights and sharing meals for two beside a crackling fire, romance is all but guaranteed.
And for those among us who spend the winter months pining for summer to return? A European winter sun holiday is just the thing. From sunny Sicily to the balmy beaches of Cyprus, enjoy a romantic winter weekend away without a snowball in sight.
