If you want a honeymoon that blends the quintessential fly and flop with some culture and history, Cambodia is the perfect destination.

Yet to experience its major tourism boom compared to its South East Asian neighbours, Cambodia has retained its unspoilt scenery and authentic charm. A phoenix rising from the ashes of a turbulent past, Cambodia is very much a destination on the up; all the more reason to enjoy a luxury honeymoon here sooner rather than later.

Those in search of sun, sea, sand and some pretty spectacular hotels to boot should head to the coastal towns of Sihanoukville or Kep. While the pristine white sand beaches and beautifully clear ocean have always been there, it's taken a while for some really good hotels to catch up. The wait, however, is over with the hotly anticipated Song Saa resort very much living up to (high) expectations, among other great properties too. One of the best things about Cambodia's coastline, though, is that it is dotted with beautiful, uninhabited islands so you can sunbathe on a different beach every day. There are some fabulous spas in these areas too so the happy couple can unwind after the whirlwind of chaos that is a wedding; a certain amount of relaxation is the key to any luxury honeymoon.

Honeymooners looking for a spot (or a bucket-load) of culture will have their socks firmly blown off by Cambodia's Angkor complex. Best seen at sunrise when the view is nothing short of life-changing and the crowds haven't arrived yet, Angkor is a truly spectacular collection of centuries-old temples spread over roughly 250 square miles.

For a taste of modern Cambodian life, Phnom Penh is the place to be with its French colonial influences, buzzy rooftop bars and bustling local markets. It's also a great base from which to step into Cambodia's turbulent and bloody history with a tour of the Killing Fields and S-21, the prison where many were tortured and killed under the Pol Pot regime.

So whether you simply want to spend your honeymoon lounging on the beach, or if you want to intersperse the relaxation with some culture and history, Cambodia is a truly exceptional destination.
