Ski Trips

At this time of year, when the skies darken, they're already selling mince pies in the shops and it becomes permanently soggy underfoot, we long for the seductive slopes. With this in mind, here's our guide to our favourite resorts in Europe for ski trips this winter...

Best for romance...

Zermatt. The romance starts as you make your way up to the village by a tiny little cog railway and continue to your hotel in a horse and sleigh along the car-free streets of the village. The views of the Matterhorn mountain are guaranteed to cause stirrings of romance in even the most curmudgeonly.

Best for families...

Lech. Leave the hardcore to St Anton! Three quarters of the slopes in Lech are suitable for beginners and intermediates. There are patient, understanding and tireless ski instructors who speak enviable English (and multiple other languages besides), kids clubs where they can perfect snowball making. Don't say we didn't warn you!

Best for value...

Val Thorens. Knocking spots off various of its more vaunted neighbours, VT combines access to the world's largest ski area with more reasonable pricing, quieter slopes and guaranteed snow. What's not to like, we ask?

Best for serious vertical...

Chamonix. The omnipresence of Europe's highest mountain is a reminder that the extreme skiing and near vertical skiing potential is never far away here. Challenge yourself to ski with the best in the birthplace of extreme skiing.

Best for scenery...

Verbier. Pushing Chamonix for the title of best off-piste in Europe, Verbier is the French resort's way prettier cousin from over the border in Switzerland. Sweeping views south down the Val de Bagnes and across to the St Bernard pass are rewards matched by the adrenaline rush from all of those fabulous tree runs.

Best for foodies...

Hotel Rosa Alpina. The Dolomites in general, but Rosa Alpina in particular is restaurant skiers' idea of heaven. Michelin-starred chefs compete for attention with gorgeous rustic cabins and lodges that offer up hearty and utterly delicious food.
