After a few begrudged moans at the thought of endless traffic jams, no seats on tubes, and our glorious city being over run by too many tourists, we were in fact, proved wrong. We loved the Olympics and have been well and truly hit by the Olympic bug that spread far and wide. The 'Inspire a Generation' tagline has certainly rubbed off as well, with children suffering from a bout of Olympic fever just as much as their (not so) sporting elders.
It's not all bad
Less of 'what will we do now it's all over', and more of 'lets carry on the fun'. In our efforts to keep morale high and post-Olympic depression at bay, we have put our heads together to find some of the best deals out there. It doesn't matter that Summer has almost been and gone as fast as Usain Bolt, as October half term is next on our agenda, and there are plenty of deals in far (and not so far) flung places. The Cypriots may not be synonymous with Olympic stardom, but they certainly win gold for their climate - racking up a grand total of more than 300 days of sunshine a year - and they have plenty of activities on land and water to keep both children and grown ups entertained for hours on end. Take the Almyra, who are offering a 50% discount on children's rooms for all stays between 1st September and 31st October.
Children stay free
Further afield, children can stay at Matemwe Private Beach House in Zanzibar for absolutely nada, nil...free. Gone are the days of the 'I'll take you in my suitcase' gag, and the lucky children can now join in the winter sun fun without smashing the piggy bank. Matemwe Beach House sleeps up to two grown ups and four children, therefore perfect for families, and has a private pool. Guests can also use the hotel's facilities as well as taking advantage of the wide range of activities from diving, snorkelling and kayaking, to reef walking and a trip to historic Stone Town.
Head North to, well, North Africa for yet more special family deals that make the approaching half term something to look forward to - not that any parent wouldn't not, of course. Both the Residence Tunis in Tunisia and the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh in Egypt are offering seven nights for the price of six throughout October and November. The North African climate is perfect at that time of year, and both hotels are great for families. The Oberoi in particular gets our vote with its kid's club featuring bowling, slides and mini-basketball.
Something to look forward to
So, families, catch the last of the summer/first of the winter sun (depending on which way you look at it) on an October half term getaway. As September fast approaches, so does the thought of school shoes that fit and gel pens that work. Quell the dread with the much more fun task of last minute holiday-making. It is always nice to have something to look forward to after all...
