Miami is renowned for some of the best city beaches in the world, which we will of course advise on, but beyond the beaches there's plenty to do on your Miami family holidays. If you have youngsters into wildlife and the natural world there are a number of animal sanctuaries and more adventurous days out such as kayaking through mangroves in Oleta River State Park, a green haven in the North Miami Beach district. Then there's Key Biscayne's Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, home to migrant birdlife, a venerable old light house to climb and more lovely beaches. There's more wildlife to spot at Jungle Island on the slightly less exotic sounding Watson Island, and next door on Watson is the Miami Children's Museum for smaller children. Further afield but still easily accessible from Miami for a half or full day tour are the Everglades, where the whole family can enjoy speeding through the protected swamplands on airboats spotting alligators, manatees and more.
Back in the city itself, there are cultural attraction galore aimed specifically at youngsters, with children's theatres, art workshops and family-friendly museums aplenty. Meanwhile, for families with sports fan children, Miami is home to top teams in all four of the main American team sports: American football (the iconic Miami Dolphins), basketball (Miami Heat), baseball (Miami Marlins) and even ice hockey (the Florida Panthers).
Finally, Miami is the perfect start or finishing point for further exploration within Florida, including to the Florida Keys, the string of islands to the south of Miami accessed by a series of extraordinary bridges for a great Florida family road trip.
