Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
Umbria, Rome
100% customisable for you
Your luxury escape to Rome and Umbria begins today with a direct two-and-a-half-hour flight to Rome.
When you arrive in the ‘Eternal City’, you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your elegant hotel where you will be staying for the first three nights of your trip. After settling in, venture out for a bite to eat. We can recommend the best spots in town for delicious local delicacies from authentic pizzas to melt-in-your-mouth pastas, washed down with some wonderful wine.
For the first full day of your trip, set off bright and early for a two-and-a-half-hour private tour that showcases some of Rome's top historic sites and architectural masterpieces. You’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide who can give you fascinating insights into the places you visit and peel back the layers of history while sharing stories about the city.
Your tour begins at the Roman Forum, the beating heart of ancient Rome, followed by Palatine Hill, one of the oldest parts of the city which is home to fascinating archaeological ruins. Next, stroll along the Via Sacra (the main street of Ancient Rome) towards the Colosseum, taking in the most treasured sites of the city from time-worn temples to beautiful basilicas around the Forum Square.
The Colosseum is well worth waiting for – a marvel of ancient engineering that has been crowned one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Here, you'll learn about the role the Colosseum played in the social life of ancient Rome (including the gory gladiator battles that took place) and delve into how this colossal building was built.
After the tour, enjoy an afternoon at leisure as you reflect on everything you've learnt about ancient Rome (so far). Indulge in a leisurely lunch – Italian style – and wander the city's labyrinthine streets before tucking into another delicious dinner in an authentic local restaurant (we know how to avoid the tourist traps and overpriced menus).
We’ve left today free for you to explore at your own pace. After your busy day yesterday, enjoy a leisurely morning before setting off to see the sights. If you're in the mood for more culture, we can arrange for you to enjoy a private guided tour of the Vatican City and Sistine Chapel. Here, you can learn about the art and architecture of these stunning sites, and marvel at the spectacular sweeping views from the dome of the enormous Basilica. We can also arrange a tour of trendy Trastevere, a neighbourhood which is known for its lively cafes and trattorias.
Come afternoon, enjoy another delicious Italian lunch before taking a stroll around the city's lush Botanical Gardens or browsing some of the city's wonderful designer shops for a taste of Rome's modern culture.
It’s time to say arrivederci to Rome today as you collect your hire car and drive two-and-a-half hours to Umbria for the second part of your Italian getaway. The route is seriously scenic – taking you through rolling countryside, past olive groves, vineyards and small stone villages – so sit back and enjoy the journey.
When you arrive at your luxury hotel, take the time to settle in, explore your surroundings and get ready for dinner – this will be your home away from home for the next four nights.
Today is an exciting day for foodies as you venture into the forest to hunt for truffles. Abundant in Umbria, these delicious delicacies are integral to the region's cuisine and can be grated over pasta, stirred through scrambled eggs and shaved over risottos.
After breakfast, set off on a scenic drive towards a nearby family-run farm where you'll venture into the woods with an expert truffle hunter in search of fungi before tasting the fruits of your labour during a delightful lunch complete with a demonstration of how to make fresh tagliatelle and an education on cured meats.
You’ll also have the chance to sample generous portions of salami and bruschetta (cooked on the barbecue outside), all drizzled with rich olive oil and freshly made truffle sauce, and accompanied by plenty of local wine for good measure.
No trip to Rome and Umbria would be complete without tasting some of the region’s finest wines. After breakfast today, you’ll be met at your hotel and driven to a family-owned and run winery. Located in the beautiful southwest of Perugia, the Castello di Monte Vibiano is one of the finest vineyards in Italy. Committed to the region’s terroir and classic winemaking practices, the boutique wine estate is known for its flavourful, organic wines. Enjoy a walk through the sun-dappled vineyards during a two-and-a-half-hour tour, before tasting four of the wines.
If olive oil is more your thing, then you’re in luck as the estate also produces some of the best extra virgin olive oil you can find in Italy which you can also sample – along with some local cold cuts from the region – after your wine tour.
On the penultimate day of your luxury holiday to Rome and Umbria, you'll be exploring the historic hilltop town of Assisi. Nestled among rolling hills, this enchanting Medieval town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famed for its centuries-old architecture and art as well as being the birthplace of St. Francis, one of Catholicism's most venerated saints.
On arrival, you’ll be met by your local guide and taken on an exclusive private tour through the charming centro storico (historic centre) to see some of the town's top sites, including the fabulous fresco-filled Basilica di San Francesco.
Come lunchtime, enjoy a tasty meal in an authentic local restaurant with more delicious regional dishes to feast on, from freshly made strangozzipasta to thinly sliced prosciutto ham and black truffles, accompanied by some of the region's wonderful vino varieties.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end and today marks the final day of your luxury holiday to Rome and Umbria. Enjoy a relaxing morning and breakfast before dropping your hire car back at Perugia airport and boarding your direct flight home.
Or, depending on the season, the hire car could be dropped off before catching the train towards Rome, where you’ll then fly back to London, a journey that takes approximately two hours.
