Beyond the Arctic Circle Winter Break in Norwegian Lapland

Tromso - Havila Cruise - Kirkenes

Starting from between £2700 to £3600 per person for 6 days depending on the season of travel, advance booking time and the accommodation and activities chosen

Itinerary Highlights

  • Enjoy a two-night cruise from Tromso to Kirkenes in the magical North Cape region
  • Learn to steer a pack of huskies on a sled ride through a wintry wonderland
  • Cruise across a frozen fjord on a snowmobile in search of king crab
This journey takes you beyond the Arctic Circle into the wild lands of Norway’s Finnmark region. Far from the crowds, where the sun disappears behind the horizon for two months a year, this region’s immaculate snowy landscapes sit under the spectacle of the Northern Lights.

The trip begins with a couple of nights in Tromso, where you can cosy up in cafes, wander wintry streets and the fascinating Polar Museum. After your first night here, head to the North Cape region on a Havila Cruise. Spend three nights onboard this comfortable cruise, soaking in the surreal Arctic scenery and enjoying optional excursions from the ship. Disembark in Kirkenes, where you’ll try your hand at mushing, head out on a snowmobile safari – hunting for alien-esque king crabs – and get cosy in a quirky (but oh-so comfortable) snow hotel.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your eight-day adventure to Norwegian Lapland begins with a three-and-a-half-hour flight to Tromso, the largest city beyond the Arctic Circle. Upon arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to your friendly hotel in the city centre. Relax this afternoon in the outdoor sauna with breathtaking views of the city.

Today, you have the whole day to explore Tromso and its surroundings at your own pace. Bundle up for a walk in the bright, fresh air before ducking into the warmth of a cosy cafe or head out to sea for a whale-watching trip. We’ll also arrange tickets for the Polar Museum, which traces the history of trappers and explorers in the Arctic regions. Inside, discover an entire room dedicated to the polar expeditions of celebrated Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen.

As the day draws to a close, head to the city’s port to board your Havila Cruise to Kirkenes, which departs from the mainland in the early evening. Enjoy dinner on board before retiring to your cabin for a good night’s sleep as you’re transported through the Arctic Circle.

Today, continue to enjoy the surrounding Arctic scenery as you glide along the coast towards Kirkenes. En route, you have the option to add on exciting excursions, from snowmobile safaris and ice fishing in the Arctic to birdwatching near North Cape. Everything is tailored to you, so simply ask your consultant to book you onto the trips you’re most interested in.

Bid farewell to your cruise this morning, as you disembark and are privately transferred to your quaint snow hotel in Kirkenes. Don’t be fooled by the name, this hotel exudes comfort, and you'll soon feel right at home within its cosy restaurants and outbuildings.

To give you an idea of just how remote you’ll be, the only thing between Kirkenes and the North Pole is the isolated archipelago of Svalbard. Let that sink in.

Once you’ve settled into your cosy room, it’s time to put your mushings skills to the test on a magical dog sled ride. Explore the vast snowscape in the company of a musher and a pack of huskies, as you learn how to drive a team through the winter wonderland.

If you think you know crabs, think again. Today, you’ll set out on a winter safari, facing the largest crustacean in the world – the mighty king crab, whose leg span can reach a mind-boggling five feet wide.

Despite their alien appearance, these creatures are found in the fjords around Kirkenes, where fishermen cast traps through holes in the ice. You’ll be taken on a snowmobile ride across the frozen fjord to help pull these ocean giants from the waters, before heading to a rustic restaurant to sample your catch and enjoy a meal of juicy king crab.

Wave goodbye to your snow hotel, zip up your bags and begin the first leg of your journey home. Take a private transfer to Kirkenes airport to board your two-hour flight to Oslo, where a quick layover will allow you to stretch your legs before you hop on a two-hour flight back to the UK.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

MAGIC IN THE LYNGEN ALPS

If you have a few more days to spare, we recommend extending your stay in the incredible Lyngen Alps. The Scandinavian Alps extend to the Lyngen peninsula, along a fjord where dolphins swim and migratory birds flap their wings overhead. Here, you can ski down mountains rising high above the glacial valleys with the azure sea as your horizon. This is also a place where fishermen and Sami people have been able to preserve their traditions and heritage. Fish for wild cod in the middle of nature, hit the slopes on perfect snow and gaze up at the night sky for a last chance to see the mystical Northern Lights.
