Travel back in time on this eight-day adventure to Athens and the surrounding coastal area of Sounio. Follow in the footprints of the ancient Greeks as you hop between ancient monuments, from the Acropolis to the Temple of Poseidon. You don’t need to be a history buff to appreciate their beauty – just ask any of the yearly six million visitors.

Your holiday kicks off with three nights in Athens, where a tour of the Acropolis will throw you into the deep end of Greek mythology. After plenty of sightseeing and feta-eating, head south of Greece’s capital to arrive in Sounio, your home for the next four nights. Relax on beaches, hike through the National Park and admire even more ancient Greek monuments.

Route

Everything is 100% tailored to you
DAY 1

Flight to Athens

Scrub up on your ancient Greek history, because today you're off to Athens. Wake with the birds this morning as you head to the airport, speed through security and settle into your plane seat. The flight is around three-and-a-half hours, so make sure you've consulted our recommended reading list for Greece to fill the time (or drift off to Stephen Fry's audiobook retellings of Greek myths). When you land, you’ll be privately transferred to your elegant hotel in the heart of the city. Drop off your bags, head out into the city and soothe your rumbling bellies with some delicious Greek gastronomy.

DAY 2

Athens’ ancient wonders

Retrace the footsteps of those who roamed Athens thousands of years ago with a visit to the Acropolis. Perched high above the city on a rocky outcrop, this fifth-century BC citadel is a testament to the artistic architecture of the ancient Greeks. Built in honour of Athena, the patron Goddess of Athens, its monuments are the epitome of Greek mythology: the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Theatre of Dionysus, and the Propylaea. During the tour, your guide will take you to the museum, which houses over 4,000 objects found on the ancient site.

DAY 3

Explore Athens at leisure

We’ve left today free for you to explore Athens at your own pace. The city is bursting at the seams with ancient wonders so history buffs will be in their element. And there’s contemporary culture to experience too, with plenty of trendy bars and cutesy cafes (our Concierge can recommend the best) and some excellent restaurants where you can tuck into tasty Greek grub. Join Athenians at the tables and chairs spilt across squares and dig into plates stacked with souvlaki (meat skewers) and keftedes (meatballs).

DAY 4

Onwards to Sounio

Pack your bags ready for today's private transfer to your next hotel in Sounio, a one-hour drive south of Athens. Perched on the toe of Attica, Sounio is home to the legendary Temple of Poseidon, swathes of sandy beaches and Sounio National Park. Settle into your terracotta bungalow, then slip into swimsuits and dive into one of the hotel’s pools or straight into the Aegean Sea.

DAYS 5 to 7

Sounio

Over the next three days, you’ll get to experience Sounio’s lovely landscapes and historic sites. A trip to Sounio National Park is a must. Accompanied by a private guide, wind along dirt roads and over green hills as you venture from Agios Konstantinos to Agia Varvara. Along the way, admire the clifftop views of the glittering Aegean Sea and stop off to explore the ancient Lavrio Mines and the gulch of Chaos, a sinkhole with 165ft-tall walls.

A trip to Greece wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Temple of Poseidon, and luckily for you, it’s right on your doorstep. We recommend a stroll up to the cliff-side monument at sunset, when you can see 16 of the original 38 columns silhouetted against the yolky sun. It won’t be hard to understand why they deemed the grand structure worthy of honouring the God of the sea.

DAY 8

Home time

Feast on one final Greek breakfast, because sadly your last morning in Greece has rolled around. A private transfer will take you back to Athens, where you’ll head to the airport and board the three-and-a-half-hour flight back to London. The time will fly by as you discuss your newfound knowledge of the mythical Gods that once ruled Greece.
