Visions of the Niagara Falls may just peter away when you set your eyes on Iguaçu Falls - the largest waterfall system in the world is wider than Victoria Falls, higher than Niagara and, in our humble opinion, more beautiful than either. The name itself is a reference to its incredible size – Iguaçu Falls literally means ‘big water’ - so expect a spectacle of immense proportions. It’s easy to combine Iguaçu Falls holidays with other stop-offs. Before you hit the natural wonder why not pause at Sao Paulo, only an hour-and-a-half flight away, for a dose of cosmopolitan life. Stroll around the leafy parks, duck into contemporary galleries and dine in hip restaurants before you immerse yourself in one of earth’s greatest natural spectacles. Or you could combine the thundering falls with a jet-set beach address on the gorgeous Emerald Coast - the perfect antidote to all that jungle adventure.

"The accommodation perfectly matched our needs, and we loved the app, destination document, playlist and reading list. Our Concierge was really responsive and quick, and the Original Services were absolutely perfect - these are both reasons why we would come back to Original Travel. There were a few specific memorable moments, including a music and dance show and bike trip in Salvador, a football match in Rio and the lovely hotel in Buzios. Thank you so much for a memorable holiday!"

"This was truly the trip of a lifetime - really personalised service, brilliant itinerary, seamlessly organised, and the app and Concierges were so useful. We loved it all. The local guides were also brilliant and we learnt so much from them all. The gifted football tickets (plus driver and guide) on our first night were so special and something we have never had from any other tour company. All in all, a 10/10, 5-star experience! Thank you all."

What can you find in Iguaçu that you can’t find elsewhere?

An Eden-like paradise of epic size, straddling the Argentinian/Brazilian border, this spectacle showcases nothing less than awesome power. Meandering 400 miles west from its source in the coastal mountains of Paraná and Santa Catarina, the Rio Iguaçu finally widens and falls over an area 1.7 miles wide with 275 distinct falls tumbling 240ft down a high canyon wall. You can explore the two sides with a naturalist guide - a dab hand at navigating the walkways, scouting out the best places for a picture and taking you to the best platforms where you can peer over the awesome curtains of water. The most impressive site has to be the ominously named Garganta do Diablo (Devil’s Throat), on the Argentinian side, a hair-raising thundering cataract plunging from a U-shaped cliff. The oddest site at the falls comes courtesy of the fact that many Brazilians venture across to the Paraguayan town of Ciudad del Este to shop for cheap electronic goods. This gives rise to the rather strange sight of South American families, soaking in the spray of the Falls, lugging vast plasma screen televisions across the catwalks of Iguaçu. Then there’s the Iguaçu River, the perfect place for riveting adventure, such as zodiac rides in the powerful spray and heli-rides to take in the sheer perspective. But it’s not just impressive waterfalls to gaze at here - land-based exploration beckons, adventure among the surrounding thick rainforest where you can blaze through nature trails that reveal coatis, toucans and giant anteaters.

Who are Iguaçu Falls holidays best for?

Nature lovers, game for a spot of adventure. Think - unmissable outings such as boat rides on the Iguaçu River, visits to the tropical bird park and eco-walks on the lookout for the rare jaguars and other exotic wildlife.

What are the best ways to discover Iguaçu Falls?

We consider Iguaçu to be a year round destination as the falls are even more impressive in the rainy season and visitors aren't so concerned if there's no sun. Definitely see the falls from both the Argentinian and Brazilian side. We can recommend ways of navigating the crowds in order to marvel at this iconic site, with as much privacy as possible. One tactic is to stay in a hotel right at the edge of the falls, where you can rise early and explore the cataracts, before the park opens up to the public. Or you can base yourself out of a jungle lodge with your very own 4x4 and naturalist guide, allowing you to pause whenever you please. How to combine Iguaçu Falls holidays? For contrast, infuse a trip with a stint in Rio, to celebrate Carnival and lap up the cosmopolitan city. Or marry two great wildernesses - collaring jaguars in the lush Pantanal and animal tracking in the Amazon.

A special thing to do in Iguaçu:

Stay in a romantic lodge for the ultimate jungle experience. Head out with your dedicated guide hiking nature trails without another soul in sight and swimming in crystal-clear pools only reachable by boat. Experience the falls with unparalleled insight, then retreat to your stilted villa for downtime and to indulge in candle lit dinners.

Alternatively, what better to way to admire the spectacular Iguacu Falls than from up in the sky by helicopter? This may be the only way to truly appreciate their enormity.
