Because the real heavyweights are under water, and even the most immense terrestrial animals seem ridiculously small compared to one of these large whales - whether humpback, black, or southern right, or the peaceable whale shark. This is the place to experience the thrill of sharks, too, of many kinds: Zambezi bull, tiger, hammerhead, guitar, leopard and mako sharks, and not forgetting the cult hero Carcharodon carcharias, the great white shark. They all come here along the length of the coast to feast on tuna. And from May to July, just to vary the menu, they all flock to the sardine run. This mass migration of the little silver fish, as they head north, forms an immense shoal more than 20 miles long and 30 metres deep, and attracts sharks, whales, swordfish, sea lions, birds - and divers - to a phenomenal feeding frenzy.
