Apoka is the only lodge in the middle of Kidepo Valley National Park in the heart of the Narus Valley.
There are ten large tented rooms with hardwood floors, solar-heated hot running water and stylish furniture located around a dramatic rocky kopje and each with the most astounding views out across the plains to the jagged mountains in the distance.Outdoor bathtubs are carved out of the rock face to maximise the opportunity to enjoy the view.
The lodge is elegantly decorated making the most of the dramatic scenery and light that surrounds it but this is not at the expense of any sort of comfort. There are oversized armchairs, king-size beds, cushions in little private nooks, soft summer duvets, Egyptian cotton towels and excellent food despite the camp's isolated location.
So much game wanders in front of the rooms and to the waterhole below the rock carved swimming pool that it's not really necessary to venture out on safari. However, for those who would rather get amongst the action, game drives are through spectacular scenery and one highlight is spotting huge herds of buffalo that often number as much as 2,000 head. Walking safaris are possible and, for anyone feeling very energetic, there's Mount Morungole to climb. Culturally this is also a fascinating area as it is home to the Karamajong and the Ik peoples.
