China Visa Requirements
Until the 31st December 2026, British citizens don’t need a visa for holidays to China for stays of up to 30 days. For stays longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa before travelling to China. If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible for visa-free entry, check the requirements with the Chinese Embassy in London.
If you don’t meet the requirements for visa-free entry, you must arrange a visa before travelling to China. If you’re aged between 14 and 70, apply online and then visit a Chinese visa application centre in person, where your fingerprints will be scanned. There are application centres in London, Manchester, Belfast and Edinburgh. Those aged 13 or under, or 71 or over, do not need to attend in person, but someone must submit the visa application on their behalf.
Visa requirements for Hong Kong and Macau are different, so make sure you check the relevant entry requirements before you travel.
If you visit Hong Kong from mainland China and plan to return to the mainland, you’ll need a visa that allows you to make a second entry into China.
Passport Validity for China Travel
Your passport must be valid for the entirety of your stay and have an ‘expiry date’ of at least six months after the date you arrive in China. It must also have at least two blank pages.
Other Key Entry Information
Chinese immigration authorities may collect biometric data to register your entry into the country.
You may need to pass through medical screening when you arrive, which can include temperature checks or, more rarely, medical tests and examinations.
If you’re travelling to Tibet or to the Tibet Autonomous Region, you’ll need a permit arranged through a specialist travel agent in China and must travel as part of an organised tour.
