Itinerary Highlights

  • Enjoy a long weekend in Morocco’s cultural and spiritual capital, Fes
  • Stay in the heart of the city’s medina
  • Discover Fes your way with an in-the-know local guide
  • Whip up some authentic Moroccan fare at a local cooking class
Travel back in time on this four-day trip to Fes, the ancient capital of Morocco and one of the finest preserved cities in the Islamic world. If ever the cliche ‘an assault on the senses’ was apt, it's here – think the heady aromas of perfume and sweet pastries, vibrant colours in medieval tanneries and the buzz of a city going about its business in the same way it has for centuries.

Your long weekend begins the moment you arrive at your riad, a charming and serene place in walking distance to the Fes’s bustling bazaars, artisan workshops and hidden mosques. Bursting with madrasas (educational institutions), gardens and palaces, Fes is often referred to as Morocco’s cultural and spiritual capital, and you’ll get to know the city on a private tour with a local guide.

As well as its architecture and artisan crafts, Morocco is famed for its cuisine, spices and street food scene, so we’ve also arranged a chef-led cooking class to learn the secrets of preparing authentic dishes. Four days might not seem long enough, but we think it’s just enough time to discover the best of this buzzing city – so get ready to dive into this whirlwind adventure…

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Big Short Break in Fes starts today, so head to the airport and whizz though security before relaxing in the lounge. Your flight will take around three-and-a-half hours, giving you plenty of time to leaf through a Morocco-themed book from our expertly curated reading list.

On arrival, you’ll be fast-tracked through customs and privately transferred to your centrally located riad, just a 20-minute drive away. Spend the rest of your day exploring the buzzing streets of this ancient city or chilling at your riad with a fresh mint tea, a zingy cocktail or an ice-cold beer.

This morning, fuel up on a hearty Moroccan breakfast before heading out with a local guide to explore the city. Spend the day discovering why Fes is known as the ‘City of Artisans’, visiting the ancient Tanners district, Place Seffarine, renowned for its coppersmith workshops, and the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts, which showcases the mastery of local carpenters. Along the way, stop for a tasty lunch before heading back out for a taste of the city’s vibrant market scene (souvenirs, anyone?).

Today you’ll be trying your hand at cooking authentic Moroccan dishes under the supervision of a local chef. To kick off the class, you’ll be taken to a local market in the ancient medina to choose the best ingredients for your three-course menu. As you wander along narrow alleyways lined with produce, you and your chef will decide what to make – think tagines, couscous, salads, soup and desserts.

Back in the kitchen, it’s time to pick up some secret Moroccan cooking tips. Learn how to smoke aubergines for stews, slow-cook meat with a blend of spices and discover the cultural significance of Moroccan food, before finally tucking into your tasty plates.

The rest of the day is all yours: go exploring again, revisit interesting places, or hit the souqs to buy traditional textiles, jewellery and homewares.

Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Fes today, so enjoy one final breakfast and take any last-minute snaps of the colourful markets and street scenes. Once you’re all packed, a private driver will drop you back at the airport for your flight home. You’ll be back on home turf three and a half hours later, ready to share your adventure stories and new cooking skills with friends and family.

AN IN-DEPTH CULTURAL TOUR OF FES

Want to learn more about Fes’s history and culture? Guided by a researcher, storyteller, guembri player and member of the Sufi Hamadcha brotherhood, this tour will offer you a deeper understanding of Fes. Discuss the historical, anthropological, architectural, artistic and spiritual aspects of the city, visit key cultural spots – some of which aren’t usually accessible to tourists – and meet musicians, Sufis and craftsmen happy to share their skills and knowledge. This meeting offers a rare and detailed insight into what makes Fes the city it is today.

TOUR VOLUBILIS, MEKNES AND MOULAY IDRISS

This all-day tour allows you to visit some of northern Morocco’s most impressive historic sites. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Volubilis is the largest archaeological site in Morocco. The remarkably preserved remains of this ancient Berber-Roman city allow you to envisage it in its former glory, and its splendid frescoes are a sight to behold. Next up is the equally impressive Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and the former capital. Around 13 miles from Meknes is Moulay Idriss, an all-white holy city built in tiers on a rocky outcrop. This highly sacred city is visited by thousands of Muslims every August for a pilgrimage known as a moussem.
