‘The Imperial Cities of Morocco’ has a great ring to it, but this name wasn’t just cooked up by the tourist office. Morocco’s complex and storied past has given rise to four historic capitals, each a maze of atmospheric alleyways, military monuments, famous mosques, zawiyas (Islamic religious buildings) and souqs. During this week-long trip, you’ll discover them all.

Begin in Fes, a spiritual hub whose architectural and artistic treasures have a distinctly religious energy. Explore the city with a local guide, becoming truly immersed in its traditional atmosphere, before heading to three historic sites nearby – including Meknes, your third imperial city – to sink further into the splendour of Imperial Morocco.

Next, hop on a train to Rabat, the country’s current capital, on the Atlantic Ocean. After a whistle-stop tour of this buzzing city, your second and final train journey takes you to Marrakech, home to bustling squares, grand palaces and an array of fascinating museums. Much like the other cities, Marrakech promises stunning architecture, shady medinas and the aroma of leather and spices to accompany you as you explore.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Today’s the day: your trip to Morocco begins with a flight to Fes, which takes just over three hours. When you arrive, you’ll be met at the airport and privately transferred to a central riad, your home for the next three nights.

Unwind after your journey with a trip to the hammam, a lounge on the terrace or a cup of traditional tea in the courtyard. This evening, enjoy a meal of modern Moroccan cuisine in the riad’s dining room.

Today is all about discovering the real Fes. Guided by a friendly local, stroll around the old town’s maze of alleys, learning the secrets of life in this buzzing city. Just a heads up: the enthusiasm your guide has for their home is infectious.

Learn about food and culinary traditions at local markets, discover historic architecture and crafts at the 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa (a spectacular school-mosque) and wander through the stunning Jnan Sbil Gardens, established in the 18th century. This is your chance to get to the heart of what this city is all about, and to pick up some useful tips for the rest of your trip.

Just a short drive from Fes are the historic sites of Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes, which you’ll explore today with a private guide. First is the Berber-Roman city of Volubilis, capital of olive oil in ancient Mauretania. This vast archaeological site evokes a real sense of what the prosperous cities of North Africa were once like, and its magnificent mosaics demonstrate just how valuable art was in the Roman world.

Next up is Meknes, a city with a storied history. Founded in the 11th century, it acted as the capital of Morocco from 1672 to 1727, and many of the monuments that have earned Meknes the title of UNESCO World Heritage site date back to this era.

18 miles north of Meknes, you’ll find Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, often referred to as the ‘Kingdom of Light’. This sacred town houses the tomb of Idriss I, the first major Islamic ruler of Morocco and the founder of Fes, who died in Volubilis in 791 AD.

Today you’ll travel by train to Rabat, Morocco’s capital, a journey which takes around three hours. When you arrive, head straight to your intimate riad in the medina, where you’ll be staying for the next two nights.

This afternoon is yours to enjoy some R&R after your journey: spend some time on the patio, take a dip in the pool or indulge in a spa treatment. Tonight, feast on more delicious Moroccan dishes at the restaurant.

Cameras at the ready: today you’ll visit the great monuments of Rabat, Morocco’s modern capital, with a private guide and driver. First up, visit some of the Almohads’ most impressive architectural feats: the Kasbah of the Udayas, a striking citadel built in the 12th century, and the Hassan Tower, the iconic minaret of a famously incomplete mosque.

In Chellah, a vast archaeological site, you’ll find traces of an ancient Roman city (and those that followed). The site eventually became a burial ground for the Marinid dynasty, and this fortified necropolis is now peaceful and opulent.

Finally, discover the Dar al-Makhzen (Royal Palace of Rabat), a beautiful classical-style structure built in the 19th century. Along the way, stop for a tea or coffee to keep you fuelled as you explore.

This morning, hop on a three-and-a-half-hour train to Marrakech. You’ll be spending your last two nights here, so check into your charming riad in the medina and relax in your new surroundings.

Once you’ve settled in, head out into the city to bag some bargains in the souq, enjoy a plateful of traditional tagine or sip a sunset drink on a rooftop – our clued-up Concierge is on hand to recommend any hidden gems.

Today, we’ll arrange tickets for some of Marrakech’s most iconic museums, including the Jardin Majorelle, the Berber Museum and the Yves Saint-Laurent Museum. The Jardin Majorelle garden, created in the 1930s by French painter Jacques Majorelle, is a mesmerising mix of luscious plants, trickling water and colourful architecture.

Just a short walk away is the Berber Museum, home to a collection of 600 pieces of art and ethnographic artefacts collected by Pierre Berge, installed on the ground floor of the famous blue villa. This museum documents the story of the Berber peoples, a civilisation that has existed since ancient times and still continues to thrive today.

The Yves Saint-Laurent Museum, meanwhile, invites you to be enchanted by the legendary couturier's work through clothes, accessories, photographs and drawings. Designed by Studio KO, even the building itself is a testament to the designer, featuring sleek facades resembling threads of fabric. You’ll have the whole day to visit these three fascinating places at your leisure.

And that’s a wrap – sadly the time has come to head home. With a tummy full of tasty Moroccan food and a head full of fun new facts, you’ll be privately transferred to the airport for your three-hour flight back to the UK.
