Time away with the family is a precious commodity and making sure you find a destination with the perfect blend of relaxation (for tired parents) and fun activities (for curious kids) can be (understatement alert) something of a challenge. Well, that's where we come in and if you're looking for a family getaway this summer then you should look no further than the wonder-continent that is Africa. A place of tremendous beauty, culture, adventure and wildlife, we could wax lyrical all day long about the glories of Africa but unfortunately there simply aren't enough superlatives. But here we go, our favourite African adventures for families this summer…

Rhino in Madikwe, Africa

Malaria-Free Safaris, South Africa

Many shy away from taking young kids on safari but the malaria-free Madikwe Reserve and Waterberg are perfect for youngsters. There's some jaw-dropping wildlife to see and you can introduce the kiddies to the arts of bushcraft and animal tracking. The minimal flight time and time difference also make this the perfect destination for young families.

Essaouira Market Goods

Culture in Morocco

While Marrakech gets hotter than the surface of the sun during summer, heading out into the Atlas Mountains and to the coastal town of Essaouira is ideal for a short family break. Trek in the foothills of the dramatic Atlas Mountains, stopping off in small villages along the way, before heading for some R&R and a spot culture in Essaouira. While the near-constant wind isn't ideal for sunbathers, it is great for watersports - ideal for keeping the kiddies busy.

Boat sailing in Zanzibar, Africa

Bush & Beach, Tanzania

Enjoy the best of both worlds with a bush and beach holiday in Tanzania. See jaw-dropping wildlife in some of Africa's best national parks and reserves (wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, anyone?) before heading to the tropical idyll of Zanzibar, where you'll find pristine beaches and excellent hotels. The safari plains of Tanzania also combine brilliantly with the beaches of the Indian Ocean, particularly the Seychelles.

Sunset View across Winelands

The Winelands & Cape, South Africa

Africa doesn't have to be all about the safari and South Africa's Winelands and Cape are a fantastic alternative. It's all about the great outdoors here with mind-boggling scenery, gourmet cuisine, family-friendly hotels and endless activities, from whale-watching and hiking to sea-kayaking. Then there are the vineyards, which thoughtfully offer chocolate tasting for kids while Mum and Dad sample some of the grapey stuff.

Tribal necklaces, Kenya

Adventure in Kenya

If you've got teenagers in tow and are in search of adventure then Kenya is ideal. Combine the iconic game viewing of the Masai Mara with a safari in the private reserves of Laikipia. Avoid the crowds and enjoy the area's rolling green hills and diverse wildlife in all manner of ways, from helicopters and quad bikes to horse riding and walking. Other activities include visiting local markets and villages, tubing down rivers and fly camping. In short, it's a fantastic adventure for all the family.

Child on safari, Africa

Sharky & George-ify Your Holiday

if you're planning an African family adventure, we've teamed up with much-loved children's party people, Sharky & George, to provide your little monsters with a carefully selected kit to help them discover the magic around them. It includes a spotter's guide, mini microscope and star chart, plus, let's be honest, you'll have a whale of a time playing along as well!
