Mild, tranquil and blissfully crowd-free, Mallorca is an unsung hero when it comes to winning winter holiday destinations. While it may not bathe in the same golden heat it enjoys during summer, the island’s provincial paths, chiming churches and serene shores are equally captivating at this time of year.

So, cast off your scarves and gloves and head to Palma de Mallorca (or just Palma, if you’re in a rush). The island’s cultural powerhouse, this city is full of art, museums and historical heritage, making it the ideal push-off point for your out-of-season sojourn.

Once you’ve cavorted around the capital for a few days, hop in your hire car and head to Ses Salines in the south of the island. Here, you can round off your trip exploring hilltop hamlets, peeking into secluded coves and (if you don’t mind the chill) dipping your toes in turquoise waters. Sounds dreamy, right?

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

The winter blues are no match for your plans this morning. Head to the airport, whizz through security and settle into the lounge before departure. Flights to Palma take a speedy two hours and 30 minutes, giving you just enough time to shift into holiday mode by cracking open a good book.

After you land, a private driver will be waiting to whisk you off into the heart of the city, where you’ll check in for three nights at a wonderfully welcoming hotel.

Having taken a beat to unpack and freshen up, venture out to explore your surroundings this afternoon. In the historic city centre, you’ll find the Placa d'Espanya, Palma’s iconic transport hub. From here, you can stroll down the lively shopping street of Carrer de Sant Miquel to indulge in a spot of retail therapy – or, failing that, some breezy browsing – before dinner.

Wrapped around a beautiful bay, Palma is a delight to discover, thanks to its cobbled alleys, Gothic churches and Baroque palaces. So, over the next two days, you’ll do just that, strolling along the streets to uncover the distinct delights of this pretty city.

Start by meeting a friendly local to uncover Palma’s hidden corners. Along the way, you’ll also hear stories about the lives of famous former residents, such as Ramon Llull, Jehuda Cresques, Jules Verne and Saint Junipero Serra.

The rest of your time here can be as spontaneous as you like. Take that prized photo on a walk along the Renaissance-era ramparts leading to the Port of Palma and appreciate the architecture in the Palma Cathedral and the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. Stop for a combo of coffee and people watching in the Placa Major. Or, if you’re an art lover, discover Miro's studio at the Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro.

Of course, don’t forget to follow your nose to the Mercat de l'Olivar, too, where you can grab a bite of sobrasada (cured sausage) or a piece of ensaimada (a traditional spiral-shaped pastry) to tide you over until dinnertime. Buen provecho (enjoy).

Bid Palma an affectionate farewell this morning before heading out to collect your hire car and set off on the 40-minute drive to Ses Salines, in the south of the island. Road trip tunes at the ready...

When you arrive, check in for four nights at your stylish hotel, where you can unpack and unwind before dinner tonight. Not sure where to go? Your trusty Concierge will be on hand to point you in the right direction. Time to tuck into another mouth-watering Mediterranean medley of cured meats, succulent seafood and verdant vegetables.

A small rural town in Mallorca’s southeastern tip, Ses Salines offers easy access to calm coastal panoramas, soft sandy shores and crystal-clear waters. In fact, you can find all three at Es Trenc Beach – talk about hitting the jackpot.

To truly appreciate the unspoilt beauty of this nature-filled nook, one of your days here will be dedicated to a rugged coastal hike from Cala S'Almunia to the cape of Ses Salines – time to stock up on snacks in the local shop.

When you’re not breathing in the crisp sea air on Mallorca’s windswept coast, you can spend your time sipping a glass of wine over a leisurely lunch, strolling through hilltop hamlets lined with olive trees and kicking back in your hotel with an engrossing holiday read. Winter gloom never seemed so far away.

Sadly, the time has come to leave the secluded shores of Mallorca behind. Lay out a delectable spread of sugar-dusted pastries (accompanied by a steaming pot of coffee) this morning before driving back to Palma, where you’ll drop off your hire car, breeze through airport security and settle into the lounge before take-off.

The return flight to the UK is another speedy two-and-a-half-hour stint, meaning you’ll be home in time to try that bottle of Mallorcan gin you picked up at duty-free as a prelude to dinner this evening.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

HIKE THE SERRA DE TRAMUNTANA

For a deeper dive into the island’s northern landscapes, set off on a four-hour hike from the chic hilltop town of Deia to the vibrant village of Soller. Along the way, you’ll pass through a pair of pretty villages and enjoy stunning views of the mountains and the coastline – cameras at the ready...

PRIVATE TOUR OF AN ORANGE ORCHARD IN SOLLER

On the outskirts of Soller, a Mallorcan woman has opened an orange orchard to the public. With the Tramuntana mountain range as a backdrop, you can wander between rows of century-old trees to discover more than 18 types of oranges, including five that are local to Soller. Afterwards, enjoy a light lunch in the style of pa amb oli (which literally means ‘bread with oil’ in Catalan).

KAYAK IN THE PENINSULA DE LLEVANT NATURE PARK

Calling all nature lovers, this one’s for you. Head to the island’s northeast coast to kayak through the immense natural beauty of the Peninsula de Llevant Nature Park. If you fancy it, you could also enjoy a spot of birdwatching while you’re out here – the booted eagle, peregrine falcon, Audouin’s gull and red kite are all renowned residents.

A FEW DAYS IN THE MOUNTAINS

Those keen to delve into an even more rugged landscape can swap the south of Mallorca for a few days in the Tramuntana mountains along the island’s north coast. Then again, why choose? Add a few more days onto your trip to enjoy both the windswept shores of the south and the dramatic cliffs of the north. A win-win, indeed.

MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR

If you have little ones in tow, don’t worry, this itinerary can easily be adapted to suit the whole family – just ask. We’ll be more than happy to organise family-friendly accommodation and activities designed to appeal to all ages.
