This five-day road trip to Romania introduces you to two different (but equally impressive) landscapes: the UNESCO protected wetlands of the Danube Delta and the beautiful old streets of the capital, Bucharest.

The first part of your trip takes place in Somova, gateway to the Danube Delta. On boat trips with expert private guides, venture along winding waterways and learn about the region’s flora and fauna. Birdwatchers will be in good company here, with plenty of species to spot from pelicans and spoonbills to cormorants and ospreys. If you’re lucky, you may also catch sight of a catfish coming up to the surface to feed or an otter playing in the shallows.

Part two of your trip takes you to Bucharest, the country’s capital. On a private bike tour, pedal around the city and see its star attractions from the Palace of Parliament to Revolution Square. Then end your trip on a high note with a delicious dinner in a restaurant recommended by our Concierge.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Romania adventure begins today. Head to the airport, breeze through security and relax in the lounge before your direct three-hour-and-20-minute flight to Bucharest.

When you land, collect your hire car and drive four hours to Somova – gateway to the Danube Delta. Check in to a stylish villa and spend the afternoon relaxing after your journey. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool, soothe aching muscles with a stint in the sauna or stretch your legs with a stroll to the nearby lake.

After a hearty breakfast this morning, set out to discover the Danube Delta by speedboat, accompanied by a private guide. This is the largest wetland in Europe, and in this part of Romania, the Danube splits into multiple arms and canals that flow towards the Black Sea.

During the cruise, you’ll pass marshes, waterways and woodland while your guide tells you about the area’s many fish and bird species. If you’re lucky, you’ll encounter a catfish, one of the largest freshwater fish in Europe, reaching over eight feet long.

Fancy some more sightseeing this afternoon? We can also arrange a private catamaran cruise on Lake Somova for more birdwatching opportunities.

The delta doesn’t just belong to the wildlife. The Lipovans, a Russian ethnic minority group who split from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th and 18th centuries, settled in the region in large numbers. During another boat trip, encounter local Lipovan fishermen who navigate the waterways aboard lotca, traditional wooden boats that have been used in the delta for generations.

If you’re a keen birdwatcher, we can also arrange for you to set out on a birdwatching boat trip with a naturalist guide. Keep your eyes peeled for white pelicans, white-tailed eagle and osprey, which are being reintroduced to the area. You’ll also learn about the region’s plant species, such as white water lilies, which are good for the water quality, blocking sunlight and preventing algae growth.

Wave goodbye to the delta and drive four hours back to Bucharest where we’ve arranged for you to stay in a characterful hotel in the Old Town. Once you’ve unpacked and settled in, strap on a helmet and set out to explore the city by bike.

In the company of a private guide, pedal along charming alleyways, passing the city’s main monuments – including the vast Palace of Parliament and Revolution Square.

If you want to extend your sightseeing, we can arrange for you to continue exploring on foot with a private guide. Visit must-see attractions like the Palace of Parliament, one of the largest buildings in the world, and the National Art Museum of Romania, as well as learning about the capital’s rich history. Come evening, mark the final night of your trip with a delicious dinner in town (our Concierge can recommend the best spots and book you a table).

Sadly all great adventures must come to an end. Enjoy a slow start to the day with breakfast at your hotel and a final stroll around the Old Town. Then head to the airport, return your hire car and catch your three-hour-and-20-minute flight home this afternoon.

BIRDWATCHING BOAT TRIP IN THE DELTA

On a private boat trip, cruise on the Black Sea between the towns of Tulcea and Sulina with a stop off at the fishing village of Mila 23 for a seafood lunch.
