Forever wedded to the myth of Dracula, Transylvania is a fascinating region, full of charming towns, quaint villages, hearty cuisine, architectural diversity and a rich – not to mention extremely complicated – history. Buckle up for this eight-day escape to Romania, driving from one (excuse us) hauntingly beautiful spot to the next.

Kick off in Bucharest, the country’s capital, to prime yourselves with some cultural knowledge before buckling up for the journey into the mountains. Oh, and you’ll also want to try some traditional sweet treats while you’re here. Papanasi (Romanian doughnuts), anyone?

Next, delve into Transylvania in Brasov, a pretty city ringed by the Carpathian Mountains. Continue to Sibiu for even more rural wonders before heading back south towards Snagov, believed to be the final resting place of the notoriously nasty Vlad the Impaler (the name alone explains it).

At every step of the way, you’ll be met with warm Romanian hospitality, rolling green hills, history that verges on fairytales and a series of steaming stews fit for a king or – well – a count.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Rise and shine – your rugged Romania road trip awaits. Head to the airport, breeze through security and nip into the lounge for some complimentary nibbles before takeoff. Flights to Bucharest, the Romanian capital, take three hours and 15 minutes – just enough time to make a satisfying dent in your holiday read.

When you land, grab your bags and meet your private driver to be whisked off to the centre of Bucharest, where you’ll stay for the next two nights. Check in, drop your bags, divvy up the sides of the bed and freshen up before heading out again this afternoon.

The rest of the day is yours to spend as you please. If you fancy stretching your legs, head out on a preliminary stroll. But if you’re craving some R&R, simply kick back and enjoy the facilities at your hotel.

Come evening, our local Concierge will be on hand with stellar restaurant recommendations. Let’s dig in.

After tucking into a tasty breakfast this morning, head out to meet a friendly local guide for a private walking tour of the city.

Start at the Palace of Parliament, a Guinness World Record holder for the largest administrative building built for civil use. It’s also (curiously) the heaviest building in the world.

Once you’ve gazed at the grandeur of this structure, take a stroll through the Old Town before heading to Revolution Square. Here, you’ll find the 18th-century Kretzulescu Church.

For more spiritual sites, there’s also the Church of the ‘Stavropoleos’ Monastery and the Greek-Catholic Cathedral of St. Basil the Great – neither of which are winning awards for catchy names.

Later, turn onto Calea Victoriei (or Victory Avenue) the city’s most iconic street. Then, visit the National Museum of Art and the National Museum of Romanian History. If you feel peckish along the way, do like the locals and stop for a traditional pretzel.

Wake up bright and early this morning to enjoy one last morning in the Romanian capital before checking out and collecting your hire car. It’s time to strap in for the two-hour-and-45-minute drive to Brasov, in Transylvania. Let’s pump up the road trip tunes.

When you pull into your next hotel, check in for another two nights, then drop your bags and settle in. Spend the afternoon indulging in some downtime before turning your thoughts towards dinner tonight. This is the perfect place to try Varza a la Cluj (a layered casserole dish and local staple).

Fuel up on a hearty breakfast this morning to prepare for your day of exploration in Brasov. Then, join up with a friendly local guide for a private tour of this stunning Medieval site.

Kick off at Catherine’s Gate, which used to be the sole entry point into the city for visitors and traders. Now a pristinely preserved architectural gem, it proudly wears the city’s coat of arms atop its entrance tower. Cameras at the ready...

Afterwards, stroll towards the gorgeously Gothic Black Church before weaving through the old streets and squares that surround it. Afterwards, visit Bran Castle, often referred to as Dracula’s Castle, since it resembles the setting in Bram Stoker’s iconic novel. We hope you brought your garlic…

After breakfast this morning, load up the car and buckle up for the two-hour-and-15-minute drive to Sibiu. If your road trip tunes are in need of a refresh, check out our destination-specific playlist and let the good times roll.

When you arrive, check in for two nights in the historic centre of the city. Then, following some post-car-journey stretching, head back out to scope out your suave new digs.

This evening, tuck into yet another mouth-watering meal, followed by a splash of tuica (the national plum spirit), before sinking into a stack of plush pillows to rest up for the adventures of tomorrow.

The name of the game today: satisfying your curiosity. Step out this morning with your energy levels high and your cameras to hand to start exploring Sibiu.

Having been predominantly German until the 19th century, the city is a charming melting-pot of cultures and architectural styles. You can rack up some pretty high step counts today while embarking on a spot of good-old-fashioned sightseeing in and around the centre.

Or, if you fancy tearing up some tarmac, jump in the car and wind through the streets branching out of the city. The Transfagarasan (or DN7C if you’re short on time) starts about an hour out of the city. This 94-mile-long highway cuts through the highest sections of the Southern Carpathian Mountains, making for a seriously scenic drive.

However you choose to spend the day, end it in style by asking our local Concierge to nab you a table at the swankiest spot in town for dinner tonight. Food comas incoming...

Bid Sibiu a fond farewell this morning as you check out and hit the road for the four-hour-and-50-minute journey to Snagov. Be sure to stock up on some tasty snacks before setting off...

Arrive this afternoon and check in for the final night of your trip in this charming lakeside town. If you have some time before dinner this evening, venture out to the Snagov Monastery, where Vlad the Impaler – often confused, rather unfortunately, with Dracula – is said to be buried. Spooky.

This evening, end on a high note by ordering up a decadent round of drinks to toast to a trip well spent. Noroc (cheers)!

Like all great adventures, your rugged road trip through Romania comes to an end today. Indulge in a slow start this morning before grabbing your bags and setting off on the 25-minute drive to the airport to return your hire car and head home.

The return flight takes three hours and 20 minutes; while you’re in the air, you can sit back, scroll through your camera roll, finish off that holiday read and debate following it up with Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

PRIVATE TOUR OF SIBIU

For some more context during your time in Sibiu, meet a local guide for a private tour of the city. Start at the Renaissance-style bastions of Haller and Soldisch before heading to Goldsmith’s Square. Then, visit the upper town, where Gothic and Neo-Rococo styles blend at Brukenthal Palace. The frankly named Small Square is also worth a visit, since it houses the more entertainingly named Bridge of Lies. Finally, head to the ‘Saint Mary’ Evangelical Cathedral in Albert Huet Square to see the 30ft-tall fresco of the Crucifixion – talk about a grand ending.
