Oman is a brilliant destination, and ideal for a shortish-haul honeymoon thanks to sophisticated hotels, all but guaranteed good weather and plenty of adventures to boot.

Blessed with spectacular mountain, desert and coastal scenery, Oman enjoys a calm, relaxed atmosphere and bears little comparison to its glitzy neighbour the United Arab Emirates.

Original Travel tipped Oman for the big time back in 2003 and has repeatedly visited the top-class beach hotels in the vicinity of the capital, Muscat, and in Musandam (an exclave at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula) which are perfect for a romantic honeymoon.

Think spa treatments and snorkelling along the coast, or for something a little more active there are watersports, including excellent diving, while an exclusive Original Travel private guided safari into the desert takes in some of the best scenery that the country has to offer.

Visit medieval forts that look just how castles should, spend the night under the stars at a romantic Bedouin camp amid the dunes of the Wahiba Sands or head for the coast, where you can sail on a traditional wooden dhow accompanied by dolphins, and watch rare giant turtles coming ashore at night to lay their eggs.

We like to practice what we preach at Original Travel, and two of the directors here had Oman honeymoons, so it definitely comes with our seal of approval.

Where to stay

Six Senses Zighy Bay, luxury hotel in Oman

Six Senses Zighy Bay

Zighy Bay has a dramatic setting on the Musandam Peninsula, an exclave of the Sultanate of Oman, separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates.

Garden at The Chedi, luxury hotel in Muscat, Oman

The Chedi

The award-winning Chedi is one of the very best hotels in the Gulf Region, home to luxurious guestrooms and suites, some of the finest cuisine in the Middle East and what could be a contender for the world’s longest hotel swimming pool.

Alila Jabal Akhdar, luxury hotel in Oman

Alila Jabal Akhdar

The spectacular Hajar mountain range is one of the (many) highlights of Oman, and at the centre of the range sits the magnificent Jebel Akhdar or ‘green mountain’. Long seen as somewhere to explore on route between the capital Muscat and the ancient market city of Nizwa, the opening in 2014 of the Alila Jabal Akhdar hotel means the mountains now have a supremely luxurious place to stay in their own right.

Dining at Desert Night Camp, luxury hotel in Oman

Desert Nights Camp

Located in the heart of the Wahiba Sands, a vast expanse in the Omani desert, Desert Nights Camp is the ultimate desert refuge, with an added dose of luxury.
