While the rest of the country dejectedly throws out the Quality Street rejects (Strawberry Delight, anyone?) and valiantly attempts a Dry January, why not beat the blues by jetting off to pastures new this January? Whether you're looking for good old fashioned outdoorsy adventure, soul-soothing snowy scenes or enough culture to see you through an entire year of pub quizzes, we can suggest plenty of places where January is the ideal time to travel. And for the uber-organised, we've also thrown in a few suggestions for those January destinations which require booking a good year in advance. Yep, we're already talking 2020...

1. Wildlife Wanderings

Baby Big Five in Kenya: Following the short rains the grass is greener than ever in the Masai Mara in January, and lush plains mean one thing: adorable baby wildlife. Led by an expert guide you'll spot big cat cubs and baby elephants as they make their first unsure steps in the world.

Husky-Sledding in Finland: Combine your love for animals with a love of adventure on an action-packed trip to Finland where you'll join a champion musher to race huskies beneath a starry night sky. If you're very lucky, you may even get a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

2. All About Adventure

Jungle Fun in Thailand: Just a few hours (by car and boat) from the beaches of Krabi and Phuket, Khao Sok National Park is an untamed emerald wilderness of tropical rainforest and quiet waterways. Stay in a hotel floating near the Ratchaprapha Dam and spend your days exploring with an expert guide.

Winter Ranching in the USA: During the winter months the 37,000 acres at Paws Up ranch are transformed into a real winter wonderland. As well as riding, enjoy dog or horse-sledding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and even skijoring - skiing while being pulled along by a dog or horse; winter waterskiing if you will.

3. Snow Scenes

Scandi Chic in Swedish Lapland: We know the Scandis are stylish but this snow-clad itinerary turns the cool factor up to 11; stay in two of the country's quirkiest hotels - one made of ice and one suspended in the trees. Alternatively, another of our favourite Lapland lodges still has some great January availability.

Skiing in Whistler, Canada: While the rest of the UK heads to the (admittedly lovely) Alps, venture over to Canada and enjoy the wide, crowd-free pistes in Whistler. For hardcore skiers there are also the brilliantly braggable double-black diamond runs and plenty of off-piste action too. Of course, make time for a mid-morning hot choccie.

4. Culture Vultures

City Break in St Petersburg: It might be a year-round destination but there's something very special about winter in St Petersburg. Join an architectural expert to explore snow-topped St Isaac's Cathedral and the suitably named Winter Palace, then take a romantic stroll along the banks of the frozen Neva River.

Live Like a Local in Laos: From a traditional baci blessing in Luang Prabang to exploring UNESCO protected ruins that pre-date the Angkor complex in Cambodia, our local Laos guides will make sure you really get under the skin of this lesser-known but incredibly diverse South East Asian country.

5. Beat the Crowds for 2020

South Africa: The sun is shining in South Africa in January, and cosmopolitan Cape Town and the surrounding game reserves and vineyards get particularly busy around the Christmas and New Year period. So for the best chance of securing your perfect trip for 2020, give our Africa team a call now.

Antarctica: Believe us, we know it can be hard to plan so far in advance but Antarctica is one of those destinations where you really HAVE to. For context our Americas expert Ollie (who is there now) has been telling anyone who will listen about his trip for as long as we can remember…

Sri Lanka: January is prime time for travel to Sri Lanka; the weather is warm, the tea hills remain lush and a gentle sea breeze brings welcome relief to those basking on the south coast's golden beaches. The only downside, you've got to get bookings in early, and by early we mean right now for next next year.
