Dynamic duos: think gin and tonic, French and Saunders, pineapple and pizza… okay, maybe not that last one, but the fact remains that some things are just better together - greater than the sum of their parts and thus elevated to legendary status (definitely not that last one, then). The same principles apply to travel - some destination double acts just work. With that in mind, we got to thinking (always dangerous) about our ultimate cool combos list, the jeans and white t-shirt of the holiday world, if you will. With our own cool combination of insider intel on the latest flight routes and knowledge of where's hot right now (in both senses of the word), we present the following perfect pairings...

Lisbon

Lisbon and Sao Tome & Principe

Combine one of the most popular cities on the planet with one of the most under-explored corners of the earth - Lisbon and Sao Tome and Principe. Having been mostly rebuilt following the devastating earthquake of 1755, Lisbon is now a city of wide boulevards, black-and-white mosaic pavements and wide open squares. And just an eight hour flight away is the verdant island of Sao Tome and Principe - beautiful beaches, lush jungle, wonderful wildlife and chic boutique hotels.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka and The Maldives

Sri Lanka is a country of crumbling ancient cities, untamed jungle, immaculately manicured tea plantations and soft sand beaches lapped by the Indian Ocean - few countries can boast such diversity which, given Sri Lanka's modest physical proportions, goes some way to explaining why it has continued to beguile travellers for centuries. Ten days exploring this teardrop-shaped nation combines perfectly with a few days of relaxing on the pristine beaches of the Maldives, home to arguably the world's most luxurious hotels, which are just an hour and a half's flight away.

Istria - Croatia

Croatia and Slovenia

If you want a cool combo without having to travel great distances, look no further than Croatia and Slovenia. Start in Istria in Croatia, whose proximity to the Italian border means travellers will find rolling green fields, quaint hill towns, truffle-filled forests and without doubt the best food in the country. Then it's on to Slovenia's pocket rocket of a capital, the impossible to pronounce, Ljubljana, home to meandering streets, cobbled piazzas and buzzing restaurants, all condensed into an easily walkable area. Fantastična.

Iceland

Iceland and Greenland

Iceland and Greenland is surely the coolest of combos, in every sense of the word, and anyone with a hankering for adventure will be in seventh heaven on this winter escapade. Iceland is all about raw nature enjoyed via the likes of ice trekking, Superjeep touring and snowmobiling. Greenland, meanwhile, is the newest destination on the Original Travel books and one we can't wait to start sending clients to, with its dramatic landscapes, charming fishing villages and myriad outdoor activities, from whale watching to heli-skiing, sea kayaking and dogsledding. What's more, Greenland is also easily accessible from Copenhagen, one of Original Travel's all-time favourite cities.

Rwanda

Rwanda and Zambia

If you're a 'been there, done that, where's next?' kind of wildlife wayfarer then Rwanda and Zambia is the perfect combination for you. Rwanda is another tiny country that packs quite the punch with its population of mountain gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans, one of the few places in the world where you can see these fascinating primates in the wild. Fly from Kigali to Lusaka to combine the gorillas of Rwanda with the leopards of the South Luangwa, another of the world's most elusive safari species. The South Luangwa, however, is home to one of the highest concentrations of the mysterious big cats, and they're not alone - this region is also home to large numbers of lions, elephants, hippos and buffalos.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Argentina and Antarctica

Combine one of Latin America's most vibrant and colourful cities, Buenos Aires, with the coldest, driest, windiest and most hostile environment on the planet, Antarctica. Fly into Buenos Aires and spend a few days mingling amongst the glamorous 'portenos' (residents) and exploring the distinct cultures of the different barrios before flying down to Ushaia, braving the Drake Passage and onto Antarctica. Cruise amongst a breathtaking landscape of ice and experience Antarctica's delicately balanced ecosystem, home to wildlife like leopard seals, penguins, whales and an amazing array of seabirds. Expensive? Yes. Worthwhile? Absolutely.
