Located on a golden sand beach on the fringe of the Vilanculos coastal wildlife sanctuary, the 14 chalets of the Dugong Beach Lodge provide guests with that castaway feeling without having left mainland Mozambique.
Each of the chalets offer direct access to the beach via an individual pathway, and a private deck with two day beds for the sun worshippers among us. Two chalets include two bedrooms - perfect for families with older children, or groups of friends - with the added benefit of a private plunge pool. All chalets are air-conditioned, with indoor and outdoor showers, and mosquito nets.
The lodge has one main restaurant for all meals, offering a buffet of fresh produce for breakfast and lunch, and a three course dinner each evening from a set menu. Picnic lunches can be created for island excursions, and evening dining can also be a private affair, with beach and private deck dining available if arranged in advance with the lodge team.
The main lodge pool is a sequence of mini pools, surrounded by loungers and hammocks. The lounge features African art works, a library, televisions with DVD collection and a collection of board games for quieter evenings, or choose to congregate with fellow guests at the lodge bar before dinner, to enjoy evening cocktails and the perfect sunset view over the ocean.
Using Dugong Lodge as a base, explore the protected Vilanculos wildlife sanctuary on a nature drive, in search of Livingstone's Eland, Blue Wildebeest, Plains Zebra, Giraffe, Nyala, Red Duiker, Steenbok and Grey Duiker. The large flocks of Flamingos and Pelicans are an impressive sight too! Offshore, snorkel vibrant reefs, explore by kayak or Hobie Cat, go island hopping, deep sea fishing, or finish the day with a sundowner Dhow cruise. Diving can be arranged, though there is no dive centre on site.
The lodge operates on a combination of Solar Power and generator, which is switched off around half an hour after the last guest has gone to bed.
